It’s a chair, made in Thailand, like the various Thai royalty use to ride the backs of elephants. I’ll see if I can find a picture online that is similar to ours, which is made of blonde teak, with silk cushions.
I knew I needed one! I love elephants, they don’t work so well in the garden but the chair may be an adequate substitute.
Well, here’s what our dining table looks like.
Ok, took a while, but I found a picture of a couple of elephant chairs. Go to this link, then scroll down. The first one is the third picture down on the left (title: Thai sofa in teak and rose), the second, which is a lot more like ours, is the 17th picture down on the right (title: Thai elephant settee in varnished teak). Ours looks a lot like that one (the one in the back). You can see on both how the curved “legs” of the chair is designed to fit on an elephant’s back. Of course these designs are not functional/practical because of the ornamentation. Ours is about 2-2.5 meters wide, which would have required a pretty big elephant.
If you go to this link you’ll see a picture of elephants with this type of chair on their back.
I’m sure you can find one with elephants carved in the base, back or sides. If I ever get to Thailand again I’ll look for one for you, although the trip’s a lot quicker where from where you are.
OH I love your chairs.
I shall win the lottery very soon. Thailand is a very cool place and you, me and everyone else needs to go there now
2 people (with another due in 3 weeks!) in a 2.5-story row home.
Kitchen: 1 wooden bench by door
Dining room: 6 wooden chairs (given to us by my father-in-law’s girlfriend whom my wife refuses to acknowledge), 1 antique school bench
Living room: 1 La-Z-Boy recliner, 3-seater couch, 1 cheap IKEA chair
Nursery: 1 rocking chair (my wife’s great-grandmother’s)
Office: 1 desk chair (lifted from the toss pile at work)
Attic: 1 desk chair, 3-seater futon
Basement: 4 folding NICK chairs from IKEA
Porch: 4 plastic deck chairs
Trunk of car: 2 folding camp chairs
That equals seating for 29 or 14.5 per capita.
I live alone in a two room apartment and don’t entertain. I have four dining room chairs I don’t sit in, two window seats I rarely sit in, and a couch I sit on in the monring. Mostly I sit on the floor.
Thirty chairs for three people.
Yes, we can stand but thank God we don’t have to.
24 seats/2 people.
