How many degrees of separation between you and a serial killer?

The serial killer (can’t remember names or anything, sorry): A friend of mine lived in New Paltz, NY for a little while; while there, she served as a tournament judge for Magic: The Gathering. She became friends with one of the tournament regulars, and even dropped by his house once or twice to play Magic before she got a “creepy” vibe off of him and started avoiding him.

A few months later, the police arrested him on multiple counts of murder and uncovered the bodies of nearly a dozen prostitutes in his attic. My friend says she will always be haunted by two questions: First, were any of those bodies there when she came over to play card games? And second, how the hell did New Paltz have over a dozen prostitutes?

I think you are confusing this with the story of Kendall Francois.
I posted it above. New Paltz, N.Y., is a short trip over the Mid hudson Bridge from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where the dozen bodies of prostitutes were found at his home.

Donald Harvey (aka “The Angel of Death”) is my mother’s first cousin. (At least, he’s supposed to be; we’re related on his father’s side, and we’re told by sources closer than us that he is almost certainly not Donny’s actual father.)

I never met him, and didn’t even know he existed until he got arrested and made big news.

I went to UT in the early 90s and worked in the tower (transcripts office). I ran across Whitman’s transcript one day. He was a straight-A student, and he stopped to drop all his classes the day he went on his killing spree.

As for a connection with a killer, my former supervisor is the nephew of Vito Genovese.

My mom’s cousin’s (my second cousin) adopted son and his girlfriend were killed by Charles Ng and Leonard Lake. My mom’s cousin had to testify at Ng’s trial, because apparently they were held captive for quite some time and forced to write letters to him requesting clothing and other items. Some of his testimony made the papers - he was a wreck over the whole thing.

Stalin would be enough, he was a nasty cuss. And bonzer is right that he never met Hitler. He did dine with Chairman Mao, pretty much every major Soviet political figure up to but excluding Brezhnev, and a whole lot of Warsaw Pact bigwigs. I’m not sure any of these personally killed their victims, but he had three secret police chiefs who enjoyed beating the hell out of prisoners and one of these, Lavrenti Beria, ran a rape room out of his house.

But if you still want Hitler, Svetlana Stalina also dined with Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov, who supped with the big H, so you’re still at 5. No word on if she had cocktails with Molotov or discussed Latin hiphop, which I understand he was fond of.

As for me, I work as support staff for my state’s department of corrections, and before that for the state BI. I’m one link from a whole lot of killers.

Mitt Romney is my grandmother’s cousin.

maybe 2

I worked night security back in school and we would get calls sometime from women who wanted to be escorted back to their cars. One of the women explained that she had known Teb Bundy back when he lived in Utah and had been in the same Mormon ward. They had even gone one a group campout together. After he was caught and she found out that she had known a serial killer, she didn’t like going out alone at night.

For a few months, I had a scuzzy guy working for me. I knew he was trouble, and tried to fire him several times, but my supervisor refused.

About 2 months after the job ended, he was arrested and subsequently convicted of rape and murder. For a crime that happened before he came to work for me. He had made several creepy references to being a witness to a murder.

Not sure how many degrees this is - 2? 3?

I grew up & got married the first time in Florida. One of the guests at my wedding, who was a friend of my in-laws and the father of a girl I knew at school, was a victim of spree-killer William Cruse (scroll about halfway down page) in 1987.

2 degrees from one serial killer and one “parallel” killer. A guy from Boone(?), CA I knew in college had some interesting experiences

  1. He liked to mess around with explosives and fireworks (early 80’s). Ran into a guy in town who enjoyed it too. Talked about getting together at some point to experiment at the guy’s cabin. Turned out to be Leonard Lake (of the Leonard Lake and Charles Ng show). My friend said he was glad it never worked out…

  2. When he was in grammer school, his teacher was Jim Jones.

  3. Doesn’t count, but Charles Manson was born in the next town over. (but C.M was in jail by the time he was a toddler.).

Still ranks as one of the most bizarre coincidences I’ve ever heard of.

seems to be a few related to the charles ng/leonard lake duo.

i always wondered what really happened to my friend’s drummer/guitarist (whichever). i’ve lost touch with her & anything i’ve seen written about the case never mentioned a musician in particular.

anyway, years ago i lived in milwaukee, just down the street from where jeff dahmer lived (of course, our years were separated by a few - i doubt he lived there when i did unless he was in the same place for a lot of years).

I have two.

A friend of mine had a good friend named Kelly. Kelly had a young child and my friend had two, so when they would go out for an afternoon Kelly’s husband would often watch the kids. I met Kelly a few times, but never met her husband Ken. When Kenneth Bianchi (The Hillside Strangler) was arrested for the murder of two college students, my friend was very sure there had been some horrible mistake.

She believes that Bianchi actually does have multiple personalities, since she never once saw or felt anything even remotely unsettling about him. She has always appeared to be a pretty good judge of character, too.

Can you imagine how horrible it would be to find out that someone you allowed to babysit for your 1 and 3 year old kids on numerous occasions is a serial killer? She wouldn’t allow anyone but her parents, her sister and two friends she had known since grade school (one being me) to stay with her kids for literally YEARS. And who could blame her?

Lee Boyd Malvo went to high school with another friend’s son. He used to hang out at their house a lot, and they claim he was polite and seemed like a good kid. He was a good student. The only thing they can come up with on hindsite is that he was very quiet, unlike the rest of the teenagers who were there. He’d often play chess with my friend’s husband instead of fooling around with the other kids. They never had reason to give him a second thought…except to perhaps think in passing that they wished their son would calm down and be bit more “like his friend Lee Boyd.”

Huh. I figured with all the schmoozing heads of state did that they were certain to have met. But I guess they detested each other enough to delegate completely. I was assuming they’d have met over the signing of the non-agression pact between Nazi Germany and the USSR regarding Poland, the *Molotov-Ribbentrop * pact… But the pictures of the signing (provided at Wikipedia) show Molotov, Stalin and Ribbentrop, and no Hitler.

Well, if Svetlana is known to have dined with Molotov, then I’m still 5 from Hitler… Yay?

My uncle used to regularly get his hair cut by Jay Sebring. Jay made what in hindsight was a terrible decision to attend a party hosted by Sharon Tate.

My score’s about a negative 5028.

I’m bumping this thread to chime in and share my brushes with serial killers.

I used to work with the girl who developed film for Jeffrey Dahmer. A lot of the photos she developed were photos of his victims. She thought it was odd that he took so many pictures of friends while they were sleeping.

My mom knew Ed Gein. She was raised by her aunt and uncle and, when she was a kid, they had hired Ed Gein on several occasions to come and help with logging work, basically as a hired hand for the day. I grew up about a 30 minute drive from where it all happened. I know right where his house used to be (which the locals prefer to keep a secret), and the hardware store where he killed his last victim is still there (still a hardware store). I went to a car museum last summer that displayed the cash register he threw in his truck with the body. This, to me, is the freakiest of all the serial killers, with the skin thing and all.

My sister was friends with, and lived on the same dorm floor as, the “Dairy Princess” murderer. Not a serial killer, but they made a TV movie of how she rented a car and drove half way across the state to strangle the girl who was dating her ex-boyfriend. My sister talked to her right before she left that day.

Mr. Kat’s brother worked with the Green River Killer, long before they knew who it was.

I am Hitler’s love child.

Not all serial killers but I’ll post anyway.

  1. I knew a guy who killed his wife - I think she was pregnant - based on an idea he got from a TV movie. He was eventually convicted and I heard he ended up sharing his cell with Richard Craft (the “woodchipper killer”).

  2. I know another guy who killed his wife by impaling her with a large medieval-style spear, possibly accidentally (that’s what he said and it could have been true, but he was convicted anyway), while playing some kind of role-playing game.

  3. A dead body was found down the street from my house some years back and was thought to be one of Michael Ross’s victims, although not one he was ever convicted of murdering. (Michael Ross was recently executed in CT.)
