Jumping jacks – the military calls them “side straddle hops”, which I always thought was an odd name. I never heard of that term until boot camp, in 1980. And what the hell is a burpee? Had to look that up. It’s a squat thrust. And the drill instructors called that “bends and thrusts.”
We did them in gym class too but called them squat thrusts. And then in boot camp they went by the weird name of bends and thrusts. I looked up burpee earlier, and Wikipedia has a page: Burpee (exercise) - Wikipedia…
You’re a Marine, right? Do you remember them being called bends and thrusts? And with two push ups they were called 8-count bends and thrusts. Fun memories.
And, being 6-8, you need higher basement ceilings.
200, because I counted. I could have done more, but got bored. However, I couldn’t have done a lot more (like thousands), because it is actually way more of a workout than bicycling or running. Also a have a tweaked shoulder that would probably act up eventually. I might have gone longer if I slowed down; I was doing them at maybe 1.5/sec.
75+ because I got bored and stopped at 75, but I could easily have done a hundred or two. And, like Dr. Strangelove, I think slowing down would greatly increase the number. Luckily I don’t have any health or mobility issues, but the only regular exercise I get is from yard work and kayak fishing. I’m 60, have smoked for 45 years, and haven’t done a jumping jack in decades.
About ten jumping jacks have the equivalent exercise value of a walk to the fridge for another beer.
2000 is definitely possible, I remember this day of group-punishment in the Army where my whole company had to do a few hundred, it was a little exhausting but I definitely could have kept going. In the Army they now call them the side straddle hop.
I just timed myself doing 50 and it worked out to .85 seconds each, so 1.5 per second isn’t unreasonable. Especially if the jumping jacker(?) is younger and in better shape than me. In other words, most people:)
It’s still a pretty darned good pace, young or not, to be turning out 90 jacks a minute. I would think I could do it in my younger, fitter years, but it’s certainly not the pace I would be choosing to hit 2000 jacks.
About 3/4 of the way through Basic I guess we were getting a little cocky. They lined us up in the bay and started doing side straddle hops in cadence. For those not familiar the Army turns jumping jacks into a 4 count exercise. 1 4 count side straddle hop is really 2 jumping jacks. We did 800. That’s 1600 jumping jacks. At age 50 my knees are shot for some reason.
I’m short and light. Less distance to move and lower peak forces.
1.5/s was just an estimate, since I didn’t time it. But I just did 87 in 60 s at what felt like the same pace, so let’s say 1.45/s instead. That’s with hands touching the thighs and at the top.
