How many mosquitoes are in the world?

And how great is their mass put together? (If possible, I would also like to know how many are in each stage of the life cycle at any given time.)

You’re funny.

Thanks. But I’m not joking. I really want to know what the most current estimates for world mosquito population are.

How many mosquitoes are in the world?
All of them, even the long-dead ones, are still in the world.
How great is their mass?
Few, if any, mosquitoes ever reach greatness. You’ll find this is true in Massachussets, just as it is everywhere else. The very best mosquitoes are not quite mediocre. It sucks to be a mosquito.

There are a lot of mosquitoes in the world… maybe even more than that…

Why?

Only three, but they are very fast.

Ok…I was just reading an article in the National Geographic about malaria. It may have some stats on mosquitoes. I left the magazine at home, so if you can wait until tonight, I can see what it says.

In the meantime, if you wish to go to their website, it’s in their July 2007 article and it’s a fascinating article all about malaria in the modern world. It mostly talks about the Anopheles mosquito but I think in passing it does give a stat on mosquitoes.

I’ll be sure to look for it this evening.

Far, far too many.

I don’t know how great their mess is, but probably too much too!
Who know, you may get a factual reply, but I doubt it.

It’s greater for the Catholic mosquitoes than the Protestant ones.

(sorry, but somebody had to say it, right? )

How many hot dogs were eaten yesterday? And of those, how many people used mustard, but not ketchup?

I guess I’d better start my own OP.

Respectable scientists came up with the factoid that the total biomass of ants alone is greater than the mass of all humans together. What the heck is so funny about wanting to know how large the biomass of mosquitoes is? The conundrum behind this question might be as simple as: “If we could exterminate all mosquitoes overnight, would a lot of birds, spiders, etc. starve, and what’s their percentage in the food chain?”

Probably because it is next to impossible to answer such a thing. Even the ant estimate can’t be more than a wild-ass guess, can it? Do you have a cite for the ant study and what the methodology was?

Every time I see an estimate of the number of rats, ants, crabs or anything similar on earth, take it with a grain of salt. Say, how many grains of salt…?

Well, I went and looked, and I’m afraid you’re SOL. The article has lots and lots of stats on malaria but none on mosquitoes. Oh well.

I let you know when I finish counting.

Why ask us? You should be asking Snapple. One of their bottle caps says that termites collectively weigh ten times more than humans. That means they must know how many termites there are in the world. Therefore, they must know how many mosquitoes there are in the world.

Snapple knows everything! Even more than Ed Zotti does!

Hmmm - let’s just say that not many people know the details of the contract under which those Snapple factoids are produced.

And humans? If we can estimate the number of humans on earth to within half a billion or so, why shouldn’t we be able to do the same thing with mosquitoes?

No matter how many there are, they all descended from the pair Noah took on the Ark.

Because mosquitoes don’t get a census questionnaire in the mail every ten years with follow up visits if they don’t answer?
