How many movies have featured Saturday Night Live veterans? Any idea of the number of movies based on SNL characters (i.e. Blues Bros., Wayne’s World)? How does the number compare to SCTV folks?
From http://www.imdb.com :
Blues Brothers, The (1980)
Mr. Bill’s Real Life Adventures (1986)
Wayne’s World (1992)
Wayne’s World 2 (1993)
Coneheads (1993)
It’s Pat (1994)
Stuart Saves His Family (1995)
Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)
Night at the Roxbury, A (1998)
Superstar (1999)
Office Space (1999)
Ladies Man, The (2000)
Are you talking about films that started as sketches on SNL (or at least popularized by it)?
If so:
Blues Brothers
Blues Brothers 2000
That’s Pat
Night at the Roxbury
The film with Molly Shannon (Catholic school girl character)
Those come to mind.
From SCTV, there was a MacKenzie brothers film and one about the Schmenge brothers, but that was a made for cable film.
This list is far from comprehensive.
Since SNL was on TV long before and long after SCTV, the former should have more films.
Oops. Forgot to mention that those movies are direct spin-offs; i.e., the main characters were first SNL skit characters.
Only twelve movies on sketches? A good number, but a bit surprisingly small. I was actually after both, BobT, movies that started as sketches, and movies where actors got their start on SNL.
Add Mr. Mike’s Mondo Video, by Michael O’Donoghue, a writer for the show.
Oh, and “spawned” is a fine word for some of these movies. “Stillborn” would be another.
Well, there are four decent movie on that list. That’s an enviable batting average if you’re talking baseball.
(Before anyone asks, Blues Brothers, Wayne’s World, Office Space, and Stuart Saves his Family)
I don’t think Office Space was from SNL… it was written/directed/produced by Mike Judge (of Beavis and Butt-head and King of the Hill fame.)
Correct, Kevin. However, Mike Judge did several short films for SNL featuring some of the characters who later showed up on Office Space.
And if anyone hasn’t seen Office Space, hie thee to the video rental store.
