How many movies/ t.v. shows depict destruction or damage to the Statue of Liberty?

In no order, I can think of:

The Day After Tomorrow

Planet of the Apes

Cloverfield

Escape From New York

Ghostbusters 2, and she damaged things back!

National Lampoon’s European Vacation
A.I.
Judge Dredd

X-Men

Here is a very low quality video of a lot of them including cartoons.

I reckon there must be dozens. Any movie that wants to show a shorthand for the destruction of earth will hit upon the big four or five images. i.e. White house/Statue of liberty, Houses of Parliament, Eiffel Tower, Pyramids. (not sure which others are regularly shown)

Batman Forever starts with a helicopter slamming into the face of Gotham’s version of the Statue of Liberty (the Statue of Justice, I believe).

Was the head knocked off in the horribly bad Matthew Broderick Godzilla movie? I recall this from the marketing of the movie but I suppressed most of the traumatic memories of watching this atrocity so I don’t recall if the scene is actually included.

The Wiki page on the Statue of Liberty in popular culture has a list where it’s been damaged or destroyed, about 2/3 of the way down.

Holy crap. You win the thread !!!

Actually, although the poster for this movie shows the head from the Statue of Liberty torn off and lying in the street, that never occurs in the movie, nor is there any reason to think it might. Some scenes take place on Liberty Island, with a fully intact Statue of Liberty right there.

The makers of Cloverfield liked the image, though, and actually do depict the head of the statue falling into the street and rolling around. And the poster for that movie shows a decapitated statue. The posters for the two movies make an interesting pair.

Whenever there’s a destructo-pocolypse going on in Manhattan I say “Gee, willikers, I hope the top of the Chrysler Building doesn’t fall point-first…”

“Annnnd, there it is.”

The Golden Gate Bridge has gotten hit a few times, I expect.

It was attacked by Ray Harryhausen’s Giant Octopus in It Came from Beneath the Sea, but it didn’t destroy the bridge.

According to Wikipedia, it hasn’t fared so well in other flicks:

Destroyed[edit]

Golden Gate Bridge has been destroyed in the following films.

  • It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955): Destroyed by a giant octopus.
  • Superman (1978): Partially destroyed by an earthquake.
  • The Core (2003): Destroyed by unfiltered solar radiation from the Sun.
  • 10.5 (2004): Destroyed by a major earthquake.
  • X-Men: The Last Stand (2006): Destroyed and moved to Alcatraz by Magneto, one of X-Men’s villains. Shown to be rebuilt at the end.
  • Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus (2009): Destroyed by a giant monster attack.
  • Monsters vs. Aliens (2009): During a battle with the probe, it topples over onto the span and resulting in the south tower collapsing.
  • Meteor Storm (2010): Destroyed by a meteor shower.
  • Pacific Rim (2013): Destroyed by a giant kaiju.
  • Godzilla (2014): Destroyed by Godzilla after it cuts through the span.
  • San Andreas (2015): A mega-tsunami carrying a cargo ship hits the bridge, causing it to collapse.
  • Terminator Genisys (2015): Destroyed by the nuke

Another iconic bridge that has a hard time of it is the Brooklyn Bridge

Destroyed in Cloverfield and I Am Legend.

Godzilla gets trapped in it and killed in the 1998 version

Hey- it’s been since it’s original release that I’ve seen it. Funny to have such a strong icon shown demolished in the one-sheet and yet not have it happen in the film !! Thank you for the correction. I mean straight dope.

There’s a whole OTHER thread: movies that had scenes in the trailer, or shots used in the one-sheet, that never made it to the final cut.

My favorite is the 1976 King Kong standing astride the Twin Towers on the movie poster.
