Total, to this day? And what would the criteria be exactly? Does Joe Walker count, having flown a jet plane pretty much into space? Did anyone else fly a plane high enough to be considered “in space”? What about that Spaceship One that flew into space last year, how many people were aboard and did they get high enough to be considered “astronauts’?
I thought that we were all in space? Or at least taking up space. I’ve met quite a few certified space cadats right here on ground level.
Oh, you mean “outer space”. Not sure of the number. I’m pretty sure that some jet and/or rocket plane pilots have met the critera of having been in outer space.
This site says that around 450 people have been into space, depending on how you define “into space.”
Including the six currently in orbit on ISS, there have been a total of 557 people in space on 1014 man/missons. For a full list see the wikipedia article on manned spaceflight.
