How many people have seen me?

Not just me personally, but any one person. Think about it: from the second we’re born, until we die, every person is seen by other people. I’m not talking about being watched, or studied, or stalked. Just seen long enough for another person’s brain to recognize that you’re being seen as another human being. Standing in line, being passed while driving on the road, at a concert, or just walking down the street.

Is there any way to tell how many people have seen the average person during their lifetime? Assume one-time, individual views (driving past a pedestrian would be a good example), not by people I work with on a day-to-day basis for years, or family, or long time friends, or anything of that nature.

Mods, there may not be a genuinely factual answer, so move where appropriate.

I don’t think there is any answer that doesn’t depend on what you do. Someone who works with the general public is going to be seen a lot more than someone sequestered in an office. Someone in urban China is going to be seen by a lot more people than someone living in rural Alaska.

While that’s true, and I won’t disagree with it as far as it goes, I’m thinking use those extremes and find an average.

As I said, there may be no factual answer. If not, so be it.

The average number of viewing is going to be misleading. You probably want the median or something – particularly if you count TV seeing or being seen in movies. I suspect there are stars who have been seen by 3+ billion people which is going to skew the average way up. Even if you count only personal viewing there must be some people who have been seen by more than a billion others perhaps Queen Elizabeth.

I would have to say lots and lots. It would explain why, when I’m out somewhere, I keep seeing people who look familiar but I know that I don’t know them - I’ve just seen them before.

I am apparently seen by more people than the average person, becaue people are always saying, “Haven’t we met?” or, “Don’t I know you?” I guess I just have one of those faces people think they have seen before. It happened so often it used to seem weird, but now I think it is just amusing. If I was an evil person, I would fuck with them a little, but I never do.

That’s happened to me too, even in places I’ve never been before. The trouble is, I’ve never met the people who supposedly look like me, which could be interesting. Although once I worked in credit card collections, and the company phone system randomly dialed a customer who had my name – first and last.

Oldguy, you make a good point, but for the purposes of this question I’m assuming the average schmoe being seen in person, not on TV, movies, or anything like that. And not counting celebrities…think of walking on a downtown street in any city in the world – you see people, not so much recognizable; they could be deli workers, elevator repairmen, administrative assistants, cab drivers, etc. Just normal people.

People that live or work in Manhattan or London are going to be seen more often than people that have lived and worked in Colby, Kansas their entire lives.

But I will guess the average for the entire world is 150,000.
