How many Tampa Dopers remember Creature Feature?

If you do, I have great news!

I grew up with Creature Feature. It is a large part of my childhood.

I remember it. Was it just a Tampa thing, because I also remember something similar, if not the same, on WTBS or WTOG in Atlanta. Very scary, boys and girls!*

*Maybe I’m remembering Count Floyd?

DC had its own Creature Feature, starring one Count Gore De Vol. He still does a website. The same guy also appeared for a few years as Captain 20, the host of a kiddie show.

Ah, but how many of you remember Zacherley, from Philadelphia and NY? And his pet, Phyllis the Amoeba? Good times, good times…

Yes, ShibbOleth that is Count Floyd you’re thinking of, and his Monster Chiller Horror Theater - an inspired take-off on the whole genre. Particularly appealing, the episode in which the “scary movie” they’ve booked turns out to be an Ingmar Bergman-like Swedish film. “Wasn’t that scary, boys and girls?”

Early Out,

Thank you, thank you thank you for bringing up Captain 20! God, I remember him from my childhood. He did everything on that station. Children’s shows, creature feature, Public Service Announcements.

When I started college in Greensboro, NC. The local station had it’s own creature feature-type show as well as “Billy Bob’s Kung Fu Theater.” Same host for both shows. I met him at a few local sci-fi cons where he sold vintage movie posters. Fun guy.

Weird, I didn’t know it was just a Tampa thing. I was little though, so I don’t remember it very well anyway.

It’s a shame that so many small, local TV stations have been “networked” by the likes of UPN and WB. They used to be the source of lots of fun, cheesy, local content. Of course, they swiped stuff from each other all the time, giving rise to a raft of vaguely similar horror flick hosts, kiddie show clowns, and so on. These days, if someone saw tapes of Johnny Carson doing Art Fern hosting the Teatime Movie, they wouldn’t quite get the point, since the kind of thing he was satirizing has largely disappeared.

And of course, all the Sandy Frank imports like Gamera and Godzilla would never have been seen inthis country if it wasn’t for the little local stations. I’m a real MST3K fan because of all the crappy flicks WDCA inflicted on my youth.

How long before the term UHF is completely forgotten?

Yes! I grew up with Dr. Paul and I loved Creature Feature. I’ve been seeing the ads for the new one, I hope it lives up to the previous one.

I was disappointed to learn when I got older that Dr. Paul stole his “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park” bit, but still gotta love him for all the bad puns. And he was just genuinely creepy looking with that one crazy eye of his.

I think it was pretty much local because Dr. Paul lived in the area and often appeared at local events, especially around Halloween. I think I met him once but I have fuzzy memories so maybe I just saw him at a distance.

I grew up in Bradenton, FL and I definitely remember him! I found an interview that was done with him here

What a serendipitously nostalgic moment!

I grew up in Madeira Beach, went to Seminole High School, until 1980 anyway when my family moved to Denver. (There’s culture shock, and then there’s humidity shock…)

And I fondly remember Dr. Paul Bearer… but I don’t think I’ve even thought of him in 24 years.

A-freakin-mazing. What a blast from the past. I can remember him vividly, too… as well as his intro… “with Doctor Paaaaaaaaul Bearrrrrerr… <creeaaakk>”

Whoa…that is too weird…

I was just talking to my boyfriend about that show last night . And I haven’t seen it in zillions of years. Or even lived in FL for awhile, for that matter.

Yep…used to love Dr. Paul Bearer and his “horrible old movie”. Watched every Saturday!
