How many (US) cities have all 4 major sports?

My wife and I were talking about this the other day and it got me thinking. We live in Detroit, which has the Lions (Football), Pistons (basketball), Tigers (baseball) and the Red Wings.

I started trying to think of the other cities with all 4 pro sports but could only come up with a couple of definite answers off the top on my head. Other than Detroit I came up with New York and Chicago.

So, are there any other cities with all 4 sports?

What’s the fourth sport? I assume that it’s the sport that the Red Wings play.

That would be NHL hockey.

Would the Texas Rangers count for Dallas? They’re in the DFW area.

I think Denver is the smallest city to have all four - Rockies, Avalanche, Broncos, Nuggets.

Minneapolis/St. Paul has four, as does Phoenix, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Philadelphia, Boston…off the top of my head. I’m sure there are others.

BTW, ice hockey is the fourth major sport.

Boston, if you count the Patriots in Foxboro.

Well, on the other side of the coin, Los Angeles is definitely the largest city without all four major sports – we’ve got two teams each in baseball, basketball, and hockey, and we’ve even got a major NASCAR Nextel Cup circuit. But both of our football teams moved away over a decade ago.

Funny thing is, nobody seems to care.

Let’s see…
Tampa Bay has the Bucs (football), the Devil Rays (baseball), the Lightning (hockey), and…after many furtive attempts at searching no professional basketball team.

Orlando has the Predators (arena league football), the Seals (hockey), and the Magic (basketball), and no baseball team.

Miami has the Dolphins (football), the Marlins (baseball, or at least they hold their games there), the Manatees (minor league hockey), and the Heat (basketball). Does that count?

…y’know, this is a lot harder than I thought.

Houston, Astros, Rockets, Texans and Aeros. I know Aero’s aren’t top tier, but we do have all four.

I heard that the Raiders were rumored to be moving back to Los Angeles, but that might just be the owner wanting more money (or a shiney new “Something.com Stadium”)

Hah. That’s rich.

I severely doubt the Raiders are coming back to LA before Al Davis passes on…

obligatory Simpsons quote:

I don’t believe we’re supposed to count minor league (if you did, then you could count L.A.'s Arena Football team), but the Florida Panthers (NHL Hockey) play in Miami, so it still qualifies.

Atlanta Braves, Hawks, Falcons, Thrashers

Philadelphia. Eagles (football), Sixers (basketball), Phillies (baseball) and the Flyers (hockey). And I don’t even like sports. :stuck_out_tongue:

I wasted 10 minutes of my life coming up with this list:

Atlanta
Boston
Chicago
Denver
Detroit
Miami
Minneapolis
New York
Philadelphia

It’s entirely possible I missed one or two, especially with hockey which I barely acknowledge.

If Boston qualifies with the Patriots in Foxboro, then you might as well count the San Francisco Bay Area. You’ve got basketball (Golden State Warriors in Oakland), hockey (San Jose Sharks), two baseball teams (SF Giants and Oakland A’s) and two football teams (49ers and Raiders).

Oh yeah, there’s also Phoenix: Cardinals (NFL), Diamondbacks (MLB), Suns (NBA) and Coyotes (NHL).

I think if one is going to count Foxboro (or for that matter, East Rutherford, New Jersey), than the DFW area has to weigh in with the Rangers, Cowboys, Stars and Mavericks.

If you’re willing to count Baltimore and D.C. as one Metropolitan area, we have the Orioles, Ravens/Redskins, Wizards, and Capitals.

The Cardinals play at Sun Devil Stadium, which is in Tempe, not Phoenix.

Let’s expand this a bit… does any team have the five biggest US sports? (add soccerball, IOW):

There are only ten MLS teams, and only New England/Boston, NYC, and Chicago still appear to qualify.
