I’m hoping he doesn’t.
It also depends on how you think of a Creationist. Does it mean someone who believes that (short version) God created the universe, or does it mean they want that taught in public schools? The first is the 40% number, most of whom are very nice reasonable people. The second number is much smaller. Also, there’s a spectrum of Creationists, from people who believe that evolution is the method God used to create today’s species, to the people you found on the web.
Well if they believe that evolution was Gods method of creating life and the big bang was Gods method of creating the universe, they’re not creationists. Plenty of scientists believe THAT, as did Darwin.
Whether they want it taught in school or not doesn’t matter either, as far as the designation goes.
Extreme far right??
FYI, I’m the founder and “leader” of a citizen’s militia here in Ohio. (Visit my web page for more info.) I also served as VP for a state-wide militia committee a while back. Over the years I have had the privilege of meeting hundreds of other militia members in and around Ohio. Suffice to say, I have a rather acute understanding of who militia members are, and what beliefs they hold.
To date, I have never met one “whacko” militia member. Never. I’m sure they exist – I’ve just never met one. This may also come as a surprise, but I’ve never met a right wing militia member. As a feeble attempt to pigeon-hole members into political persuasions, I would estimate 70% are libertarian, 20% mainstream conservative, and 10% mainstream liberal. “Right wing” doesn’t even show up on the radar screen. Heck, I know one highly-regarded member who’s a vegetarian, and another who’s a card-carrying democrat.
If anyone’s interested, I started an “Ask the Militia Guy” thread on the SDMB exactly 1 year ago. Here’s the link.
So not only are militia members “right wing,” but they’re anti-government?? I’m confused; I thought right wing/neoconservatives wanted a strong central government.
By-and-large, militia members are “pro-government.” But here’s the kicker: We want a limited federal government that strictly adheres to the rules enumerated in the Constitution. That’s all.
Not to belittle Czarcasm’s opinion, but IMHO we’re all wackos … no exceptions.
OK, to be serious and reply to the spirit of the OP … Stoneburg, you seem to be asking how many Americans hold at least one point of view that is so far removed from the “norm” of society that it could be considered “wacko”, right?
I guess I have to stand by my initial response, after all. I mean we’re all individuals … we’re all bound to have at least one opinion that is well different from everyone else, don’t we?
Actually, they only want it when they’re running it. When the liberals control any part of it, the neocons are strongly against big government.
A slightly less snippy answer is perhaps that so-called neoconservatives are happy with a strong central government (again, as long as they’re running it), but “regular” conservatives have at least historically been more in favor of “states’ rights” and a weaker federal government. (In the same vein, conservatives traditionally are strongly against big government spending and especially against running a deficit budget, while the neocons seem to love those things.)
Sarcastro: The point I was trying to get across is that militia members by-and-large are not “neoconservatives,” nor are they “right wing.”
Your average militia member:
- Wants a small, weak, non-intrusive federal government.
- Is against the war in Iraq.
- Is not a fan of George Bush.
- Is against the war on drugs.
- Is against the Patriot Act.
- Is not a registered Republican.
- Has only weak religious convictions.
- Is not a racist.
- Wants to see laws repealed, not passed.
- Is against most “morality-based” laws.
- Is suspicious of police conduct and against police brutality.
Furthermore, your average militia member rarely (if ever) wants a “piece of the pie” when it comes to government power. We do not desire power. We simply want to be left alone. We want the freedom to exercise our inalienable rights without harassment.
No, I got that, I just misinterpreted your rhetorical question and gave an answer. I agree that it seems like most militia members are more libertarian than arch- or neo-conservative.
Anyway, assuming your list of typical militia attitudes is fair, sounds good to me. I’m pretty liberal and agreed with pretty much everything on that list.
8 million or so in New York City proper. Plus commuters.
Somebody implying that NY is full of wackos?
WHERE IS HE?!! I’LL SPORK YOUR ASS!
Over to the Obscure Media References thread…
OK, OK, it’s from THE CRITIC.
Actually no that is not what I am asking at all. I am asking what I put in my OP, I don’t see why people keep trying to read something else into it or analyse it, it was a straightforward question.
Anyway, 2 of the 3 has been answered and I have signed up at a feminist board, which should be able to answer #3, so feel free to lock this thread.
Creationists: Too many. I know a whole lot of them, including almost everyone in my family. They are pretty big especially in the South (I live in Texas) and central part of the US. Although they are big in numbers they don’t have much sway in education in most places. They did however once get Kansas to but creationism in the textbooks, but they got rid of that a few years ago. They make up maybe 15%-40% of the population.
Militia: Not many, but fringe groups get a lot of press. I’v never met anyone or knew of anyone in a militia. I do know a few people that own lots of guns, but they prefer shooting at a range on Saturdays to running around the woods playing army all weekend. They probibly have less than 50,000 people (which in the US is not very much).
Non-feminists: Not many. It really depends on your definition. But as you described it, I think they are a very small group. I have never met any woman that beleived that women were generally inferior to men.
All Americans are wackos. America was founded by people who fled Britain as they were rightly persecuted for being wackos. I have never met an American who is not in an advanced stage wackoaity.
