Now, this isn’t in GQ because I realize that we’re not going to get an answer like, “75,621 since the invention of the camera,” records for this sort of thing being less than complete.
But on an order of magnitude – obviously more than 1,000. Obviously more than 10,000, I would think. More than 100,000? I doubt it, but perhaps I’m too sheltered.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it were over 100,000. That’s a thousand new people every year since films were invented (not counting photographed porn, which goes even further back). It would tend to be a high-turnover profession, too, and one that was immensely profitable.

The Comstock laws were passed around 1875ish, and provided for stiff (no pun intended) penalities for distributing via mail any obscene, lewd, and/or lascivious material. I know the business existed, but it couldn’t have been booming the way it is now…
I’ve never understood why the world needs so much NEW porn. Like, let’s say the answer is 80,000 women. Is there something lacking in the performances of the first 79,999? I understand you need to keep hairstyles current and whatnot, but I’m just amazed that pretty much anyone willing to do it can get a job doing it. Why don’t they get turned away? “Sorry, we’ve got enough video of people fucking this year. Thanks anyway.”
What is the reason for restricting your query to women having explicit filmed sex for money?
You may get a more plausible number from the amateur ranks, i.e. not knowing any paid performers I myself have had acquaintance with at least a dozen women to whom could be ascribed numerous motives, none financial gain.
I think you’re estimates are way off… if you take the US population of approx. 300 million and divide by 2 for approx. the amount of women you get 150 million. Now, i don’t think anyone knows the percentage but if we take a conservative guess at 1 in 200 (0.5%) of women have done some type of porn in their lifetime.
That would be 750 000 women in the US alone.
Then add that to all the other countries producing porn. That figure is huge.
Now add in past “performers”, Playboy Centerfolds, amateur porn, webcams, sex shows, etc…
No wonder it is a couple billion dollar industry in the US alone.
I think 100,000 is much to low, particularly if you include plain old print photography. Also, what about women who posed for porn-y type drawings and whatnot before cameras were around - I would think if you’re sitting with your hoo-haw out doing whatever it’s somewhat porn-esque. (And no, I’m not talking about posing for a nude, I’m talking about posing for a nude in which you’re doing nasty shit.)
As to why there is always new porn - I guess tastes change. Back in the day you almost never saw anal - now it’s the most popular thing ever based on even a cursory search of the top online porn sites.
I dated two women in Hollywood that had “done porn”- both mildly.
One had appeared in a large number of “Big boob” zines, and the other had done a film by a hollywood producer known for his “Battling women” shorts. Neither was what I’d consider hard core, although the second film had quite a bit of lesbian action.
Now, that was in Hollywood, in the late 70’s early 80’s, at a time I was “in the business”, and was dating quite a few wanna-be’s and almost-be’s. So, at least back then, the % was quite low.
Explicit sex for money - I’d put over 100,000 worldwide in the last 50 years easy.
A LOT higher if you start taking amateur porn, private porn, sex industry work (prostitution), strippers, posing for photos that doesn’t involve sex, etc…
I’m afraid you’re going to have to define porn. Naked pictures? Naked pictures with, er, insertions? Or implements? The number would also go down significantly if you specify movies or video rather than still pics. Is “soft porn” included?

From the constant stream of updates across all the redtube/youporn-type sites - and there are many such, it seems most of the attractive women out there are doing it. I’ve seen some really stunning ladies doing all sorts of nasty things on such sites, and every day there are dozens more videos on each site. I think 100k is way too low. Hell from the amount of Asian porn available, there’s at least that many just in Japan (and man do they get up to some weird shit. I saw a video of some kind of TV show where the male contestants were sucked off by the all-female studio audience, having to choose a “winner” in the end).
It’s making me cynical though. Now when I see young ladies in expensive clothes and cars, instead of thinking ‘sugar daddy!’, I’m thinking ‘I bet if I looked long and hard enough, I’d find footage of you having your bumhole stuffed’. :smack:
