Cash doesn’t expire (well it’s happened in Burma, but not the norm). My US-based bank will not send new ATM cards overseas so when mine get close to expiring there is almost always a period where I am waiting for a new one and can’t use the old one.
I have just found it normal to keep cash around… at least a few thousand USD equivalent.
That’s odd to me. Two different US-based banks and one US-based credit union had no issues at all sending us ATM cards overseas. One even supplied postage paid, pre-addressed envelopes to use for making deposits by mail (which we never did) since they had no ATMs or locations in the countries in which we lived.
