I’m watching Orange is the New Black and I’m wondering how much is real and how much is dramatic licence. In the now most of the staff are male, including the guards supervising the women in their living quarters. The strip searches I’ve seen so far were conducted by female guards, but there was also a scene were an inmate in the isolation unit had to shower in front of a male guard while handcuffed to the wall. Several of the male guards are shown constantly sexually harassing the inmates without repression, the woman are placed in situations where’re their alone in a room with male staff or counsellors, and the men are allowed to touch them & conduct pat down searches. Sexual contact (short of forcible rape) between guards & inmates has been shown too. One inmate was told that it was her right to demand a female guard search, but none were available & she was sent to isolation to wait for one. How much of this is really standard practice in American prisons; especially in the federal system?
