How much denatured alcohol is safe to drink?

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback. I will definitely not drink any after these responses. One person told me not to believe what I read on Quora, and I will say, I DEFINITELY did believe that, but the majority of people here basically just debunked those answers. Thanks guys. Seriously, I was going to take Quora’s and other various answers sites word for this, but I wasn’t going to do it until I had a final reaponse from one more forum, which happens to be this.

As far as my fetish goes, I can’t change it. I’ve been this way for as long as I can remember, this is who I am. And even if I did have access to an unlimited amount of alcohol, I would only drink if I were going to masturbate (which I only do about three times a week now), or MAYBE during sex.

As far as these “troll” comments about me, why is that? Even if I was being a troll, why would someone post something along the lines of this? Like, I will admit, sometimes on Yahoo Answers I will post a very stupid troll question, just to see hoe people would answer. Here? Has this website been abused? Just asking. Maybe I’m incredibly stupid, but I don’t know.

Thank you guys’ though!

Yeah the site gets abused sometimes, but the moderators are very quick to act. People tend to be suspicious of stuff like this is the OP (you) don’t respond very fast. No worries!

  1. Sex with a dead drunk woman is rape. Please don’t do it.

  2. Salt has nothing to do with distillation. Have you checked out Wikipedia?

  3. It’s easier and safer to ferment fruit juice than to try to distill out the impurities deliberately added to hand sanitizer to prevent you from drinking it. I find that fresh apple cider routinely turns into hard cider in my fridge, with zero effort on my part. Ordinary baking yeast will make lousy booze, but it will churn out alcohol, just like wine yeasts. And fermented fruit juice (or grain mash) is reasonably safe. I bet you can find instructions for that in Wikipedia, too. If not, I’m certain you can Google it.

  4. Personally, no amount of alcohol makes me loose and happy. Small amount of alcohol have little effect, and larger amounts make me sleepy and anti social. My point isn’t that you wouldn’t enjoy drinking. Rather, my point is that your size is not sufficient info for anyone to predict how you will react to moderate doses of alcohol. People’s tolerance and actual reaction to it is quite varied. As with any other drug, it’s best to try it when other people are around to guide and protect you. You’ll be of legal drinking age soon enough. Then it should be easy to find responsible people who can help you experiment. (And I second the comment that the drinking age in the US is to damn high, and leads to too many kids experimenting without mature, responsible supervision.)

Oh, and wtf? You live in a house without salt?

You can buy table salt for about 59 cents for a big container at your local supermarket. It won’t help you get drunk, but it might make your food tastier. And a little salt does regulate the activity of yeast when you make bread, so I dunno, maybe it can help you get drunk?

Yuppers … this forum might be unique in that factual answers are not only a hard and fast rule, it’s a rule strictly enforced … so over these many many years, we’ve attracted experts and professionals from a large number of disciplines who are glad to have a place to answer questions without all the bullshit attacks we see on all them “other” sites …

It wouldn’t surprise me to see a practicing clinical psychologist specializing in abnormal and fetish behaviors come along and comment on the other parts of your OP …

This is the Straight Dope … and nothing but …

As others have said, having sex with a woman so drunk she can’t give consent is rape in many places, including the US.

Also, assuming you are in the US, it is illegal for you to consume any amount of alcohol until you are 21.

Please look up the definition of “distill”. It has zero to do with salt.

No. No amount of denatured alcohol is safe to consume. That is the POINT of making it denatured.

I expect you’d feel “nauseous and vomiting” before “loose and happy” with that one.

Seriously, drinking hand sanitizer is what I expect from an active alcoholic.

This is why the labels on liquid laundry detergent have the clear warning “do not drink” … or clothing labels “do not burn while wearing” …

Okay. You’re not an actual real person, are you? Type the letters below so we know you’re not a robot.

If you can’t read the letters, too bad.

I get that you mean “in the eyes of the law”. I just feel the need to point out, for the possible benefit of the OP, that it’s always rape, regardless of the location.

Well, with enough work you could get some to separate. It depends on the mixture, and there are a lot of ethanol mixtures available. You could probably azeotrope out ethyl acetate, benzene, and MEK. Isopropanol and methanol don’t azeotrope with ethanol. But considering the amount of work and equipment involved, it’s probably easier to convince someone to buy an underaged person a bottle of vodka.

In my experience, it’s actually more difficult to keep fruit juices from going hard … especially fresh grape juice … literally from the press directly to the pressure canner …

Thank you guys once again. I didn’t think this thread would even exceed five replies, boy was I wrong. Sorry for being naive folks, I don’t read much about drugs or chemistry, and could care less, honestly. I just needed to chime in one night to find out about something, which now I know all about.

I do have a closing question though. How dangerous is it to ask somebody at a liquor store to buy you alcohol? In terms of the law, and the person buying it for you? Meaning, if they would steal your money or not.

Well…

For the person purchasing for you a typical punishment if they’re caught is $500, or 60 days in jail, or both, but it can range up a few thousand and a day short of a year in jail. In some circumstances it can be bumped to a felony and result in years in jail.

Where I work, if I sell booze to a minor I instantly lose my job with no recourse, AND I may get all of the above penalty. If I sell booze to someone supplying booze to a minor I might still get fired, fined, and jailed.

For this reason, many people are reluctant to purchase alcohol for minors, and if I see you chatting with and handing money to someone who later comes in and tries to buy alcohol from me I might well refuse the sale - because I don’t want to be fired, fined, and jailed. And my employer will back me up on this, because they don’t want that kind of trouble, either.

If any of the above get caught supplying you with booze they will happily throw you under the bus because misery loves company - meaning YOU could be hit with fines (starting around $500), lose your driver’s license (if you have one) and so on.

And yes, someone who accepts money from you to buy you alcohol might simply buy it or keep it for him/herself. Or spend it on tobacco products, lotto tickets, condoms, or corn chips and salsa.

But hey, if you’re discreet no one might get caught, the person you pick will hand over the booze, and you can get drunk. People do get away with it, just not all the time. Proceed at your own risk. Frankly, I’d think stealing it out of dad’s liquor cabinet would be easier. I’ll point out it’s still illegal, though. Also, if you do something really stupid while intoxicated in my states these days your parents could be fined and/or jailed and I really think they’d be unhappy about that.

Seriously, could you consider getting your rocks off some other way until you’re legal to buy and drink alcohol? I know it’s not as much fun as indulging your fetish but the consequences of getting caught at this could be really damaging to those around you as well as yourself.

Moderator Note

We do not allow discussion of illegal acts like this here. You can ask about the law, but you cannot say anything that, in our opinion, encourages illegal acts. Since this clearly is intended to break the law forbidding sales of alcohol to minors, you cannot discuss this here.

Also, distillation without a permit is illegal as well. Do not discuss how to distill alcohol from sources such as mouthwash, or anything else that would violate Federal distillation laws.

The relevant section of the SDMB registration agreement is here:

… and at 17-years-old, be mindful that your sex partners are within a couple years of your age … some jurisdictions require 18 years to consent, with exceptions if the two are close in age …

TIL you need a permit for even very minor alcohol distillation.

I had no idea. I know a guy who makes truly excellent calvados, which he distills from cider, which he makes from apples he grows himself.

Of course, he lives in Quebec. According to a quick Google search, distilling alcohol requires a pricy permit in Canada, too, but Canada doesn’t take it as seriously as the US. The penalty for a first offense appears to be that they take your still and fine you $100. And they mostly only go after people who sell booze, which he doesn’t. (It’s a serous criminal offense in the US.)

Even so, I’m surprised to learn he’s not legal. He’s written a book about making cider, and he’s not secretive about the calvados.
