How much difference is there between battery brands?

A family member has a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder (gasoline V6) that needs a new battery. I’m wondering just how much difference there is between battery brands these days, as long as I get one with the same or greater CCA rating as the factory provided.

Will a Sears Diehard really last that much longer than a Pep Boys Monday discount special, or are they all just about equal?

The number of cold cranking amps you get is pretty much proportional to the surface area of the lead plates inside the battery. The other thing that makes a difference is how thick the plates are inside the battery. The more expensive batteries will have thicker plates and will be able to crank for a longer time. Compare the cold cranking amps as well as the reserve capacity.
