No tip. They don’t do much that I have a great need for. I wouldn’t mind if they did not come into my room at all during 99.9 per cent of all my stays.
Generally I leave the “No Service” sign out during my stay. I won’t need extra towels unless I am there for more than a couple of days. Even then, I usually leave a $5 bill when I leave.
The hotels we stay at the most have really nice amenities, and we’ve found that tipping the housekeeping staff gets you lots of soap, shampoo, conditioner and sewing kits to take home at the end of your stay. I don’t think we’ve bought a bar of soap at the store in years.
I always leave $5 and a thank you note. every day, because you don’t always get the same person. Also, tipping at the end leaves you without the little extras they provide for a good customer. (Extra towels and shampoo, the better coffee, that sort of thing.) Often there are higher level extras that only go into the suites. . . and the rooms of those who tip.
Unless they knock despite the DND sign, or stand outside talking loudly and wake me up. Then they get squat. I know they have a schedule, but I’m on vacation, dang it!
I am trying to imagine what would be worth $50 per day, /Southern Belle Voice [and I’m sure I can’t think of a single thing.] \southern belle voice
I tip $5 daily and leave it with a note written in English and Spanish along with any special requests. Usually I am only asking that they not leave the A/C on a super cold setting.
I stay in hotels a lot. I do not leave a tip. I tip for services, like if I ask for extra towels, then tip the person bringing them.
True story, about 25 years ago and freshly divorced I was staying at an all but abonedoned motel in an almost ghost town in the california desert. The desk clerk was the maid and the manager and the daughter of the owner. We struck up a frienship that led to a little bit more. I knew she was broke and that I would never see her again so I left her a nice tip as a gift.
I think y’all have convinced me I should be tipping each day separately (I guess I always assumed they pool).
I don’t think I ever do
I’m surprised by the number of people that apparently have always done this. I’d never heard of it and it hadn’t occurred to me to do so. I do tip pretty good for everything else though so I’ll try and remember to include hotel maids as well.
We don’t stay in hotels often, and even when we do, they’re really cheapie ones. But yeah, a couple of dollars a day. However, I never thought to leave a note. I will in the future now and I hope they got their money in the past.
Usually a five for 1 nite, and a 20 for 3. Not dissimilar to tipping your room steward on a cruise, which you would always do.
Wouldn’t you???
Wow…I run into alot of hired help throughout my day. Guess I need to carry alot more singles.
Only in the US, and $1 or $2 a day.
I’ve started tipping since I learned on the SDMB that I was supposed to, typically in the $3/night range.
For those of you who say that tipping leads to better service, could you elaborate? I can’t figure out what sort of service one might get from hotel housekeeping. I’m intrigued.
And for those who request no service, do you do that when you check in? Or just leave the do not disturb sign on your door the whole time?
The reverse. I tip $1 per day as follows (5 day stay) $5, $4, $3, etc)
It does lead to better service. You get more "stuff’ and if you stop and ask her often she’ll let you have as many sample sized bottles, etc as you need/want.
I tip because they make shit pay and have to clean up after me. If it would lead to more shampoos so be it but that wouldn’t be my main reason.
I tip $3/night plus whatever loose change I come home with at the end of the night.
Dollar a day, leave it on the pillow. That’s what my dad taught me. Of course it was forty years ago, so I should probably up the ante.
Regards,
Shodan
About $5 a day, but sometimes I forget so I have to make it up at the end of the stay.
