How much do yu hate your dentures?

Background: My husband has an inherited form of rickets, which to make a long story short means that everything in his body that involves calcium is sub-par. The big deal with this is bones, of course, but enamel is also an issue. He is 28 and his teeth are well on thier way to falling apart–he has had 7-8 pulled, the rest all have severe cavities. Eventually, he will have to get dentures, there is no way around that. The question I want to ask it, how hard should we fight to preserve the teeth he’s got? How much of a pain in the ass are dentures? Obviously, it is worth shelling out thousands and thousands of dollars to make your teeth last another 20 years. Is it worth those thousands and thousands of dollars to make them last another 5? Should we bother spending money on intermediate bridge work if the teeth supporting the bridge are likely to go soon? (if his teeth could even support bridge work, I am not sure). I am hoping that dopers with dentures (There is a band name for you!) can give us some information on just how much dentures subtract from overall quality of life, since that this is one of those things that can’t readily be undone.

I’m glad you started this because I have a question about the subject too.
Like…

Can you do REALLY SERIOUS kissing with dentures?

You know, the tongue, sucking, roaming around etc.

I get a vivid image of the “choppers” coming loose and having to fight with the things to keep them in the mouth.
Not a pretty sight…
