How much does the average Real Estate agent make?

My New Jersey office splis 50/50 with the agent, who then has to pay FICA, taxes, insurance, etc. It can three months or longer to close a sale, and it takes a helluva lot of work.

Our broker works about 60 hours a week, and makes around $100,000 gross a year. And she works her ass off.

While there are still more people who need houses than there are houses for sale, the homes around here in the $1-2 million and upwards range are difficult to sell. Things have slowed way down, but not so much that you can find a 3 bedroom house in a decent neighborhood for under $600,000…

Well, slowed down does not mean prices are going down, just that they aren’t going up nearly as fast as they have been for the past 5-6 years. Right now buyers/sellers are at a stalemate, each one trying to hold out longer than the other. The market in OC could not sustain it’s growth forever, it was insane! We have a rental property that we bought 3 years ago for $370,000, and is now worth over $650,00.

Car salesmen seem to make double that on average.

The thread What does an average car salesman make year?, which you started, clearly states over and over that most people who sell cars don’t make “double” what people are telling you most real estate agents make.

Also, there’s at least 2000 real estate agents on Vancouver Island alone (I answer the phones for all of them) so competition is pretty fierce.

DWMarch I used to work at the anwering service where I am fairly certain you must work. I know of at least one other Vancouver Island answering service survivor as well who posts on the Dope (she and I used to work at a different A/S in Victoria and we came here independently of each other). Small world, innit?

Are there rules stating I need to add the smiley? Not to mention I wasn’t answering my own question, I was making a statement/general comment, which I see plenty of people doing in General Questions. Shall I point some quips and facetious statements out for you? BTW, why do you have it out for me?

I’m in Nanaimo, so I’m at the answering service that bought the one you worked for. We bought up all the answering services in Victoria and then got bought by a larger company. Before the buy out we were AnswerPlus. Good to know there’s some answering service folks on the board!
