How much extra is this service at the kennel?

Dropped off OBL at the vet/kennel tonight. While I was there, someone brought in two cats in carriers. He was holding two pieces of paper & I could read the front one. In about a 16pt fancy font the front page had on it:

Dear <Cat name>
I know you’ve been to the kennel before & were a good kitty. Daddy loves & misses you & will be back to pick you up soon.
Love <Owner>

Does he expect the the cats to read the letters themselves or is the expectation that the vet techs will read his (personalized) letters to the cats every night as bedtime stories? If the latter, how much extra does this service cost?

If I remember, I’ll ask when I pick up my poor, neglected (because he doesn’t get this service) pooch because I didn’t have by big brass ones on to ask in front of him directly.

Osama’s been shacking up with you all this time? I thought they buried him at sea.

We’ve been kenneling our dogs and cats at the same kennels for nearly 20 yrs. While they might think we’d finally gone round the bend, I am certain they would not charge us extra for this service.

So…is it weird to call the house when you’ve been away a while, just to leave a message so the animals can hear your voice?
Just checking.

Different last name
tao, with my old dog, when I would call home (to speak to the humans in the house), the dog would perk up if they put the phone on speaker near her ear & I talked. Yet somehow, I don’t think the same reaction would be gleaned if someone else read a note from me to the dog.

It is not weird and anyone who says it’s weird is a stupid ugly jerkface.

Because I do it all the time.

Agreed. Heck - we have a friend that has left messages for the dog on the answering machine. Ok, he was drunk (the friend, not the dog), but still - it was a nice thing to do.

Most kitty threads eventually contain a post that says “cats is weird”.

This kitty thread now contains a post that says “cat owners is weird”.
My guess it that : 1. the cat owner is weird.
and possibly : 2. the cat owner is smart enough to manipulate the kennels employees.

By taping his love letter to his kitty’s cage, the employees will see how crazy he seems to be— and they will be extra careful taking care of his cat, because they don’t want to deal with a crazy client…

In what way is leaving an answerphone message on the phone a nice thing to do for your pet? They hear your voice, they think you’re home, they run around the house looking for you only to find…there’s no one there. :frowning:

So I inquired when I went to pick up the pooch. About 5 people leave notes. The really annoying ones are those that bring in a tape recording of their voice - drives the pet nuts looking for their owner. Despite what he tells the owner to their face, he does not read the letters to the pet.
He also thanked me for reminding him so that he could put some paw prints on the paper & say the cat wrote back.

My answering machine had a ‘Listen’ feature where one entered a code and could hear what was going on the room the answering machine was in for 30 seconds. I’d call from work once a day and listen for my cats having any kind of difficulty, never heard anything.

Not as big a deal with a cat. He’ll hear the voice, look at the machine, yawn, and go back to sleep. If he’s feeling particularly affectionate, and the message is long enough to last through the three minutes it’ll take him to stretch off his nap and come over to the desk, he may nuzzle the machine. When the machine does not scratch his ears, he will glare at it and return to the couch.

I’m positive that despite whatever anyone running a kennel might tell a client they won’t actually read it to them.
