The WSJ had an article today, about ethanol plants in the midwest shutting down (due to low demand for gasoline). One plant was recently sold for scrap-it had cost $271 million to build.
Is there an accurate number on how much money has been spent to build these distilleries? I know the ethanol program has been an economic loss since the beginning…but I wonder if we know how much has actuallybeen wasted on capitol costs (plants). It has to rank up there as a pretty large number.
Cannot answer the question but every time I fill my car with a 10% ethanol mix I lose mpg due to ethanol producing less energy than gasoline.
