How much memory does IE use?

I’m running Windows2000, 138MBram, IE 6 sp1 w/several updates. I’m frequently getting the message that IE has encountered errors and must close. When I open task manager and check the processes screen it shows anywhere from 16,000KB to 23,000KB memory usage. This is the highest memory usage of all the processes. Is this too high? I ran Adware and Spybot and deleted anything that was determined malware. Could they have missed something?
I’m not being redirected to other sites and no strange icons or task bars have appeared. I just keep getting knocked off line.

IE is a pig.

FWIW, my usage right now is 36,224 and that’s with just two SDMB sessions and an internal website open. Closing the internal site drops me to 34.404, closing the other SDMB page drops it to 31,564, and closing this window dropped it to about 27,000 for a half-second, then to zero as the process dropped off entirely.

Re-starting brought it up initially at about 16,000, then as soon as this page was open, 23,196.

All of that’s just a long way of saying IE uses a ton of memory and yours is no excepton. My version’s IE 6 SP2 on Windows XP Pro SP2.

138 MB of RAM is both rather skimpy to run Windows on, and a really offbeat amount. I’d have expected 128, 256 or 512. If you can afford it, and if you plan on keeping the PC much longer, a RAM upgrade will be a worthy endeavor.

There a a whole raft of things you cn do to help keep IE running well, such as clearing out the temp files and dumping all of the assorted ActiveX things that accumulate. You can do both of these by right-clicking that big blue e icon on the desktop, select Properties, then dead-center, click the Delete Files… button. Click OK, then once it’s done, click the Settings button on the right side, then click View Objects. Right-click the files one by one and select Remove, then close that window and OK your way out of the IE properties. If you actually need any of those ActiveX critters, you’ll get them again the next time you visit the site they came from. Otherwise, they just hang out there forever, and don’t do you any good.

:smack: 128MB Just a typo. I was afraid of deleting any Active X because I thought they were necessary for IE to function at all. I’ll go clean out the files now. A new computer is in the future but not the near future. Thanks for straightening me out on the memory and Active X thing.

IE6 SP1 had a bad patch a couple of weeks ago that caused it to crash on some sites. They re-released the patch today, I’d give it a try.

An even better solution: Download and install Mozilla’s Firefox. It really is all its cracked up to be.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll install it right now.

My current copy of Firefox, running just SDMB, is consuming 33,364 KB of memory. Opening IE and going to the same page has it consume 28,044 KB. And Firefox crashes regularly for me.

My work machine, which has a copy of Firefox that’s been running for a few days without being exited, is consuming 116,995 KB, with a single tab open. Peak memory usage is 498,301 KB for that instance of Firefox, accumulated by leaving open a page that refreshes itself every five minutes.
