How old is your furnace?

My 20 year old furnace needs a $200 repair job, so I am thinking of just buying a new one for $2,000. I have a 1981 55,000 btu GE Ambassador, which is no longer in production. GE’s furnace division was bought out by Rheam. I am thinking of getting a new Lennox or Carrier weathermaker. Should reduce my heating bill and be safer. What age and type furnace do you have?

I’ve got a Rheem, “gravity feed”, gas furnace. That is, there’s no moving parts.
And it’s 44 years old.
Worst part is, I can’t heat any part of my house that’s not on a floor above the furnace. So, my rec-room in the basement is pretty chilly in the winter. It’s not actually cold there, but I can’t spend a few hours playing my drums or in my workshop down there w/out having sweatpants and a sweatshirt on.

I have no idea what kind of furnace we have other than it’s gas.

I know it’s at least 20 years old. We had it cleaned and maintenanced when we moved in last August and it works fine.

I don’t relish the idea of having to buy a new one should this one take a puke but higher efficiencies would be nice. I’m going to install a digital set back thermometer before next winter so that’ll help.

Good luck. We used Carrier at the homebuilder I worked for and they seemed to do fine.
