Here’s another Wikipedia link about the battle between the Klamath sky-god, Skell, and their god of the underworld, Llao. According to the myth, the whole thing started when a daughter of a Klamath chief spurned the romantic advances of Llao who, despite being a god, was rather on the homely side.

In the Pacific Northwest, there are also Indian myths and legends about the Missoula Floodswhich occurred near the end of the last Ice Age about 13,000 to 15,000 years ago.

Stories of great floods aren’t exactly unknown - there is also speculation that the one found in the Bible is a record of an end of the ice age phenomenon. But tying them to a specific event is difficult. Note that multiple ‘historical’ explanations have been advanced for the same myths.

Heh, no need to travel to the Okneys to find mysterious human-built mounds. Those things were dead common, in Neolithic burials - the more probable inspiration for stories of this sort.
