How’s Carney doing, Canada?

You mean the one Trump wants to withdraw from?

Trump wants to add even more ridiculous tariffs on Canada because of smoke.

Who exactly do you imagine could ever have a useful discussion with this clown? What “deal” do you imagine we could offer him that would forestall such an insane reaction from him?

The free trade deal that Trump already renegotiated once before.

We wouldn’t be in this mess if we elected a PM who wasn’t above paying a bribe. Was it so hard to get the mint to make a giant gold coin with Trump’s authoritarian gaze? It worked for the Swiss.

But seriously, what does Canada do for the next few years given a deal is probably impossible? What if the next person wants to keep all the tariffs to protect jobs?

It’s not clear what Uzi expects Carney to do, became a de-facto Viceroy of the American Empire like Milei? because that’s the only way Trump will give something to you, and even then it’s not guaranteed.

We do what Carney has been doing: diversifying our trade as much as possible. No one would have been able to do that overnight, anyone with any sense knew that this would be a decades-long project that will have to span multiple governments. In the meantime, do what you can to mitigate the effects of Trump’s worst impulses. And remember that this too shall pass. At some point, Trump will be gone. We just need to hang in the fight long enough to see that day.

And hope he’s not replaced by something worse, hard to imagine as such a thing may be.

Things can always be worse.

But let’s not forget that Trump gave the richest-man-in-the-world control of his own US federal government department, so that he can (flamboyantly and RIGHTEOUSLY) destroy critical emergency aid pipeline which ensured the survival of the absolutely poorest children on this planet from dying horrible preventable deaths. The death toll could result in the deaths of MILLIONS from things like basic food, and illness.

This kafkaseque of “government murder tourism” makes the stories of war tourists sniping civilians in Bosnia in 1990s seems quaint in comparison. Musk got to play “king-for-a-year” and kill a whole lot more.

I wonder if his numbers will become comparable to that Pol Pot, Stalin, or even Mao. Time will tell.

Yes, what if the next person wants to keep the tariffs?

Also, any industry that moves south will not come back. Canada has lower productivity compared to the US. We have lower investment. We have higher and more complex regulations, we have higher taxes, all of which drive investments to places they can reasonably see a return in their lifetimes. See the RBC report on a trillion dollars of investment lost.

Carney’s trying to make (an assumption) deals with countries that we don’t even have the infrastructure in place to move products to. But lets pretend he can do this in a reasonable amount of time. How long to build the infrastructure to move the goods? Is it started yet? Have they even started consultations yet? So, 10 years out at best.

Meanwhile: KPMG on industry moving south
42% say they have moved or are planning to move operations south. How long until 42% have actually moved? Who will be left to make the products that we will ship to these other countries? This is just less than 2 years into Trump’s reign.

(Look at that report. Companies say that finding skilled people is an issue)
Canada’s top-skilled workers are leaving for the U.S. in droves for lower taxes and higher pay: TD study

And if Trump’s tariffs does move production south, which voters will vote for the party that will stop them? Their economy is growing faster than ours at about double the rate. While tariffs do affect them, it is not stopping the economy growing over 2%. While it is unlikely that Trump’s tariffs will benefit them more than if they were never implemented, he can demonstrate they did something.

Things will start to cascade quickly if someone doesn’t actually do something more than sign MOU’s and eat $160K worth of caviar flying around the world.. And as the DND was the caterer, why the hell didn’t they get box lunches like we used to get in the army. Nothing like a plate of New England boiled dinner pouring off your plate to keep you humping your rucksack up that hill.

Conservatives have been screaming for a deal, any deal, just do it!, since the start. They are 100% fully aware there is no good deal to be had. They know Trump’s unreliable and won’t stick to his own deal, based on ANY whim that strikes him, from one day to the next.

They haven’t got much to cling to. If he’d just make a deal…they could certainly crucify him for what a BAD DEAL it is.

The whole world seems to love and respect Carney, nothing but admiration for Canada on the world stage. They’re all singing his praises. Conservatives hate that so, so much.

I mean the one he’s breaking.

You still haven’t addressed the point. We HAVE A FREE TRADE DEAL. He ignores it, because he doesn’t respect law or diplomacy. So… why would you replace the existing deal, which is ignored, for another deal, which you know full well will also be ignored? What is it you want? What exactly is the point of replacing a trade deal that’s ignored with a trade deal that will be ignored?

Do you want the government to make concessions? They’ve done that. It didn’t work.

Do you want the government to negotiate? They’ve done that. It didn’t work.

Do you want them to bribe him? It won’t work.

What do you want? This has nothing whatsoever to do with who our prime minister is or what party is in power.

If you want Canada to change domestic policy to make it a more competitive place for business, hey, great, I’m totally on board with that. But that’s got zip to do with trade negotiations with the USA.

More info. Appears Carney lied or didn’t read what he signed.

Details of Gordie Howe Bridge deal released amid political pressure

Even PP hasn’t said to replace CUSMA with something else. Where are you getting this? We’re worried that Carney’s lack of action will jeopardize that deal. Then you won’t be able to shout, “WE HAVE A FREE TRADE DEAL”.

Trump puts a tariff on something. You make a deal or agreement to get them removed. Not sure how you managed to conflate the two. If his tariffs violate an existing deal, you address that. What the hell, man? You negotiate, or I guess you pout and whinge while flapping your elbows around ineffectively (well, other than to ensure you keep the support of the base who see this as emotionally satisfying. Screw those losing their jobs, though).

You mean like dropping the digital services tax?

They are negotiating. They have been all along.

You expect credit for removing something that should never have existed in the first place?

Don’t change the subject. You do acknowledge that was a concession made about trade, right?

And look, more dumb tariffs.

Hey, did we beef up border security when THAT was allegedly the reason, even though it’s not our job to police their border? Yes. Did that work? Oh, more tariffs.

So… what concession is going to stop this? We are negotiating, despite your implication we’re not. So what’s the plan?

I’m not sure if it’s in this thread or a different one but I remember at the time of the original tariffs saying that if it wasn’t fentanyl it would be something else such as wildfire smoke that would piss Trump off. Trump doesn’t need an excuse but he will take one if it’s right in front of him, sort of like how he gropes women.

Exactly this. Trump is a hateful narcissistic psychopath whose worst tendencies are now running wild because it’s his last term and he has nothing to lose. He despises Canada because Carney and the provincial premiers like Ford (though certainly not his lapdog Danielle Smith) are standing up to him.

His sole objective is to ruin Canada economically and send us into a recession so that, in what remains of his demented mind, we beg to be part of the US (also known as “the Alberta delusion”). So far he’s succeeding in weakening our economy despite the Supreme Court ruling on tariffs because Congress is AWOL. They’re not just spineless, they’re pretty much non-existent. One can only hope that this changes dramatically after the midterms.

Scott Moe on fighting with the US

Alberta has the most growth in Canada at 2.7% more than double Canada’s. Frankly, the only growth in Canada is likely Alberta’s contribution. Independence talk doesn’t seem to be hampering us, just the continued liberal boots on our necks, which hopefully we can rid ourselves of soon.

So, if you want to say Smith is Trump’s lapdog, then good on her as she looks after her people. At least you have Carney’s elbows as consolation.

Which I’m sure has nothing at all to do with the fact that the US needs Canadian oil, so Alberta is not being squeezed like the rest of Canada, and that Trump is a big fan of fossil fuels and doesn’t give a shit about clean energy or the environment, sentiments that he shares with Danielle Smith.

Potash is another resource the US needs from Canada, and Moe is happy to supply it, free of tariffs. Charged twice and convicted once of DUI and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, he seems like a really nice guy. No wonder he’s a conservative. The Saskatchewan Party was formed explicitly to oppose the NDP, the socialist horror that gave us universal health care. Can’t risk anything like that happening again!

The only thing Smith looks after is herself. See my statement above about the US need for Canadian oil.
