Trump claims Canadians want to be the 51 US state. Canadian dopers any thoughts?

Trump recently suggested that Canada should be US state 51, “Canadian people want it”
Canadian dopers, what is your perspective on becoming US citizens under Trump?

I hate it. I have absolutely no interest in being American.

I’d rather join Canada, if we’re rearranging countries.

I think Canada should bargain hard and become at least four, or better six states, plus a special statute for Quebec. With lots and lots of electoral college votes.

A Canadian polling firm – Angus Reid – has tracked the question of how Canadians feel about joining the US. Support for the idea hovers around 2% - 5%. I’d assume it got less popular recently by being Trump’s idea, but I don’t think the idea could be less popular.

According to Justin Trudeau there is not a snowball’s chance in hell for Canada to join the US. Let’s hope that Trump doesn’t include military force as he announced for the annexation of Greenland or taking control of the Panama canal. Interesting times coming up.

I hate America’s voting preference - and I hate him repeatedly stating this BS about taking over Canada. It reminds me of how Russia talked before invading Ukraine. It hardens my resolve to gladly deal with any hardship caused by the threatened tariffs. In fact - I might welcome them and looked forward to short term pain vs long term gain by seeing Canada align more with the EU and others who are not such fickle ‘friends’.

If we use the geographic size of e.g. Rhode island or the population of e.g. Wyoming as the standard for how many new states former Canada gets, we could easily arrange for this to be a bloodless coup where former Canadians end up totally controlling the US. With the exception of leaving the populated part of Alberta as a single state to minimize its influence.

Like one of those leveraged corporate mergers where a small company takes over a bigger one and the combined entity uses the bigger more recognized name, but it’s really the leadership of the small one that’s left in total control.

By my reckoning we can subdivide Canada into 2,272 states the size of Rhode Island. Thereby rendering the influence of the pre-existing 50 US states immaterial. OTOH, dividing the Canadians up according to the population of Wyoming there are enough to produce 70 new states. Which doesn’t render the traditional 50 totally irrelevant, but does say the Canadians largely or entirely control the future of the North American continent.

Please please, dear Canadians … come take us over. We desperately need it.

We don’t need your problems.

As for being annexed, there comes a time in everyone’s life when they must spit on their hands, play some Black Flag, and prepare to slit some throats.

It’s comical. Of course Canadians don’t want this.

I know many conservatives, some Trump fans, and literally zero percent of them want this.

Exactly how insane is this blowhard?!

And while we wring our hands and roll our eyes at the dog and pony show, they’re working in the background destroying the government.

Yes, they are. As far as I’m concerned, we’re past the tipping point.

Isn’t this expansionist bullshit what we were fighting in WWII? How the fuck did we end up as the bad guys?

Eta: Tribal groups may say we’ve always been the bad guys.

One of my Facebook friends is a somewhat famous Canadian actress; she recently announced purging Trump supporters in general (51st state advocates in particular) from her friends.

I am genuinely worried. As in: I don’t know what to do, what will happen to my way of life, my retirement funds, etc.

A recent poll showed some support for this in parts of Alberta (of course). Trump can easily borrow from Putin’s playbook and “liberate” Alberta, and then “liberate” other parts a few years later. “Oh, look, in Québec they’re demolishing churches and they’re oppressing their English-speaking population by forcing them to read road signs in French and to use single-payer socialist healthcare that takes forever!”

Even if the U.S. doesn’t physically invade, they can force our politicians to behave in U.S. ways so that we don’t contrast too much.

It enrages me about as much as Trump’s blather about conquering and/or buying Greenland. I.e., not at all, because it’s obvious trolling that has 0% basis in reality.

My first response was, “I clearly didn’t move far enough away from the US.”

Trump cannot “Easily” do that as he cannot get Congressional approval for invading Canada. It is not going to happen, and it’s ridiculous to be afraid of it.

If you don’t know by now that Trump is all talk and no action I’m not sure where people were in 2016-2020.

Trump is if anything well on his way to getting LESS cooperation from Canada. There’s no better way to have someone peevishly refuse to cooperate than to offend their pride. We already have a conservative premier seriously talking about cutting off electricity from border states - a thing that of course hurts Ontario, since they lose revenue, but there’s a clear “Fuck you, I’ll punch you back” push going on.

'Zactly.

This is to fill the news cycle and the MAGAsphere and the lefties’ hand-wringing club with something to talk and think about while the real business of looting the future is being done quietly backstage in the shadows.
