How strong or durable would someone need to be to function at the bottom of the ocean

I know this isn’t the usual kind of post for here and its for more serious threads but I figured it would be fun/interesting to ask anyhow. A friend and I were discussing the upcoming Superman vs. Batman film and about how Aquaman is going to be in it and we were throwing around the idea of how strong Aquaman or just a person would need to be to with stand the crushing depth of the water at the very bottom of the ocean. Any thoughts?

It’s not strength, it’s the ability to generate an internal pressure that counteracts the water pressure at that depth.

It’s not a matter of physical strength so much as of biology.

If you got rid of all the air pockets in a human body (lungs, sinuses and digestive tract in particular) then we’re not very compressible. We’d do fine down to extremely deep - essentially infinite as far as muscle and bone are concerned. Solids and liquids just don’t compress all that much compared to gas.

But the first problem divers face (at as little as 100 ft deep, getting worse the deeper you go) is the solubility of gases like nitrogen. Nitrogen narcosis is one problem caused by a literal narcotic effect that gas takes on in the human body when it is compressed. Deep divers use a mix that includes helium to try to minimize the effects. No amount of super strength will help you against those effects.

As you get really deep again, there’s another problem: the depth eventually starts to affect the proteins and enzymes in your body. They literally deform and stop working like they’re supposed to. Again, no amount of super strength is going to help here.

The only way you could really relate this to super strength is to imagine that Superman is going to hold his skin rigid like the sides of a submarine so that his body inside remains at 1 atmosphere of pressure. That could be related to strength, I suppose. Essentially, every 30 ft of water is 14 psi of pressure, and you have about 22 sqft of skin. So superman at 3000 ft deep is at 1400 psi, about 4.5 million pounds of total pressure. Good luck with that one, Supes.

So where does Aquaman’s super strength come from?

You are HOW old?

That’s nothing. His skin remains rigid under far higher pressures every time he no-sells a bullet.
