How tall are golden retrievers?

I found data that they (males) are 23 to 24 inch high at the shoulders, but what about the top of their head?

Dogs are measured at the shoulder, I have never heard of measuring at the head

The top of my golden’s head seems to fit right under my hand as I sit in a chair with my arms on the armrests. Apparently he things since my hand is just sitting there, it might as well be scratching his head! :stuck_out_tongue:

Never measured mine, and my present one is kinda stumpy. The standards are only guidelines as to what you might find. I prefer smaller ones, which might not reach the confirmation standard. Field goldens also tend to be shorter. Several folk appear to favor giant ones, which might exceed the breed standard.

Let’s see - in terms of practical matters, a golden’s nose generally can peek over the edge of a kitchen counter. As opposed to my daughter’s greyhound, wh is pretty much at eye level with the food.

Looking at my black Lab mix, I’d say her head is +/- 12 inches above her shoulders. Goldens are basically the same dog, so you can go with that.

Some dogs can get to be much larger: https://windycitizensports.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/clifford-the-big-red-dog-1.jpg

Someone who’s watched an active dog for more than five minutes would know why this is so; their heads bob up and down all of the time. Horses are measured at the withers for the same reason.

My clinical observation is that golden retrievers are SOOO tall. I base this on the following data set:

“Ohmigawd how tall are you? HOW TALL ARE YOU? You are SOOOO tall! Good boy! Who’s a good boy? YOU are!”

Edited for clarity: while it would appear that the above data set only includes GOOD golden retrievers, thus leaving the height of bad ones incalculable, it is a curious fact that there are no bad golden retrievers.

Bad golden retrievers do exist, and they are very low indeed: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/wsgsQ_1QFBs/hqdefault.jpg

The only golden I ever met in a close in contact was my sisters dog. He tended to stand on his hind legs to kiss you in the face. He was jumpy and bouncy. I remember him being way too tall, for my comfort.

Tall enough to see things on the kitchen counter. Not quite tall enough to steal it without their front paws leaving the ground. Anything on the coffee table is at high risk.

Dogs may have their heads up a lot of the time around people to get better eye contact and keep the parts that need skritching closer to human hands. When on the move most will keep their nose down or do a lot of head bobbing to get maximum reception of the cool smells.

Just to check JakeRS, are you measuring this dog for pants? If so, 2 or 4 legs?

To be honest, when buying matching pajamas for you and your pup, the important measurement in the length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and the circumference of the neck and chest behind the front legs.

What a country!

Tall enough to jam their noses into my butt when I’m not looking, so about 34-36 inches.

Which reminds me of the difference between a dog and a well-dressed man.

The well-dressed man wears a 3-piece suit.
The dog - just pants!

A friend of mine had a truly giant Golden Retriever. He was a pure-bred golden, but from a distance he looked like a blonde Scottish Deerhound. He was one of the sweetest and laziest dogs I’ve ever met.

OP here, yeah, I know they are measured at shoulders, but I am wondering what would be the actual top height in a standard dog position, after all you measure buildings at the top of the antenna’s, not where the actual building ends, so…not the best example I know, but I am a literalist, so top height for me is top height.

No, I don’t have a golden retriever yet, but I am thinking of buying one and I want to know how tall he’d be in comparison to my current dog, my current dog is about 28 cm at shoulders and around 40 cm at head height, when he is holding it in a “standard position”

Also, not really the topic, but does anyone know how tall are Great Danes at head height? I suppose that all heights I found are also for the shoulder height.

PM me for talk about breeders, my breeder, her recs for other breeders, what to look for,/expect/demand/ in a Golden breeder (specific for them) etc. etc.
