How to ask someone with a wandering eye how I should point when showing things?

A very nice person volunteers at rescue. One of his eyes doesn’t point in the same direction as the other eye. He comes in to be our manly man and lift and carry for us. He works a real job full time so I only get limited time with him, but I plan what we want him to move during those precious few hours from him.

He’s a great volunteer, and he’s a nice and smart person. I’d guess he’s in his early 40’s and he’s been dealing with his vision problem for as many years as he’s been alive, so he knows that people need to know his limitations so they can accomadate them.

Here is the problem. When I point at the bags of food that need to be moved from here to there, he often starts moving different bags. I’m pretty sure that is because he can’t see my finger and only sees my hand…so, any ideas how I can use him more efficently next time?

Is there a way to describe the bags other than pointing? Are they labeled, or could they be?

Have you considered asking him? Or alternately you could identify the food that you need moved verbally instead of just pointing? Really, he has a wandering eye not a form of mental retardation.

Just walk over and touch the bags.
