how to bypass nook hd registration?

Well, my beloved nook color is showing signs of possibly giving up the ghost, and I didn’t want to spend a trillion dollars on some tablet that wouldn’t give me the features I want, so I bought a nook hd on eBay.

But here’s the problem. I got the nook color used, and the person who owned it had taken care of wiping it clean, resetting it, and bypassing the registration step of the oobe.

Now this nook hd that I bought is brand new, and I want to skip the registration on this one too. I’ve looked online and found varying instructions for this, and the one site everyone recommended (nookdevs) is no longer available. I searched this board too, and didn’t find anything.

So have any of you guys done this, or do you know a sure method for skipping the oobe and not registering?

Does not registering gain you anything?

Yes, because if you register you have to give B&N your credit card number and it also opens a pathway for them to clutter up your device with a bunch of junk advertisements. I like to sideload stuff onto it, so having online access to B&N doesn’t thrill me anyhow.

Not finding out the thing is stolen/counterfeit.

Here is the link to the xda-dev forum for Nook HD/HD+. Lots of useful info including what you are looking for. E.g., rooting it.

You can also install CyanogenMod on it and run any suitable Android app/reader/etc. that you want. Even the Kindle reader. (Using that on a B&N tablet is kinda spacey.) You can also get B&N books/etc. as a generic tablet. Win-win-win.

When I got my HD+ 2 years ago, I immediately installed CynogenMod on it, never registered it, etc. Never looked back. I get timely updates, more apps available, etc.

Unless you have some particular crush on B&N’s store, I don’t see why you should stick with the stock OS and all the battery killing bloat that comes with it.

+1 for this. I have a VERY old HP Touchpad which I installed the abovementioned, and it’s great now. And I’m a tech dunce. I forget the site which walked me through the rooting, but it was very easy.

quick summary factory reboot power + N, N, N on welcome screen do either of the following

vol up + touch bottom right of screen factory screen button appears

vol down + touch bottom left of screen enable adp button appears

on factory screen vol up + touch bottom right of screen skip OOBE button appears

hope this helps even in 2023 :slightly_smiling_face:
