Given that “911” is a common shortcut to emergency services and that many emergency workers gave their lives trying to save people on that date, a tribute to fire fighters and EMTs would be in order as a part of such remembrance.
Okay MLS, I for one would go for that; the second Tuesday in September is declared National Emergency Workers’ Day or some such terminology as is appropriate. Flag flown at half mast is honor of victims (of all sorts of crime/disaster/terrorist attacks) and the men and women who lost their lives trying to save them.
Yeah, I would like that. I thought of it very shortly after the event and am surprised it hasn’t been suggested by anyone in a position to do anything like that. It would be something that everyone, regardless of political leanings, could participate in, since there are very few who are actually in against the kinds of things that firefighters and EMTs do.
It’s an interesting issue. Some of us still remember Pearl Harbor (the day that will live in infamy), but increasing numbers probably have not a clue as to when it is. It’s difficult to commemorate a day when something bad happened. We tend to have celebrations of good things, for obvious reasons. Even so, when was the last time there was a celebration about VE day or VJ day? (That’s Victory in Europe and Victory in Japan for the youngsters.) Does anybody know if any of those were celebrated on their respective anniversaries?
15 years from know? Well, considering that nothing really is remembered/celebrated now, it will be nothing more than Dec 7th. Anyone remember what day that is?
Americans don’t give an F anymore unless they get a day off of work.
Are you seriously asking this? I hear and see stuff about Pearl Harbor every year on December 7th, even more so in the last two years. You think in 15 years, people won’t remember seeing 2800 people die and the World Trade Center collapse?
Personally, I’d say nothing. September 11th will always be September 11th here, and I don’t think people here need anything to remind them what it is or what happened. I don’t see what some kind of national commemoration can posibly add. Individual people, of course, will do whatever they feel is necessary and/or appropriate. But I don’t need it to be a federal holiday or anything. If I ever start reading about the “9-11 Mattress Sale” or discounts at car dealerships, I’ll be ill.
We should enact the US Fakeriot Act and tax people who say they care or are still broken up about 9/11 but really aren’t.
Oh yeah, the US Fakeriot Act also taxes people with more then one flag on their car.
Kidding aside, I say we remember it by getting over it. Build a little statue and move on. The terrorists win a little more everytime a American starts wimpering over it again. In fact, I think the USA would do best by NOT having an official 9/11 day.
Yeah, it happened. It sucked. But you can’t wear a black arm band forever.
In comparison lets try to remember what happened 15 years ago ? Or 30-31 years ?
Lockerbie, 1988. PanAm 103. 259 dead. (Including my upstairs neighbors when I lived in London.) I dont think that many americans know about it… naturally the WTC is way bigger and will take longer to “forget”.
-> Today in History: Sept 8th, 1972 Arab terrorists kill 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics. May seem incredible to many that this these have been going on for over 31 years.
