All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people.
Most large post offices have a passport issuing service. You need to fill out the application, which I belive requires that you present a birth certificate and some other documentation. You also must have passport photos taken (one hour photo places do this). The fee is, I think, about $65, and it takes anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks to get the passport.

I’m coming to freakin’ see you Sue…
OMG NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Go down to you local Kinko’s, ask them to take some passport photos for you. Then gather up your social security card, your birth certificate, and a picture id (and your passport photos). Go to your courthouse and fill out the paperwork. (I’d call them first to find out if they have passport issuing capabilities…they should).
They’ll mail your passport to you in a few weeks. I think it costs about $40, but I could be wrong on that.
I think the U.S. State Department has information about this on their website, including the form to fill out.
Ultress the Adultress…Can anyone give me information on how you go about getting a pastport? What do I need?

Ok Suzie I spelled it wrong in the thread. Thank goodness I didn’t spell it wrong in the topic post.
I am coming to see you my little Canadian friend the second week of July. If I can get in your country.
I would like to go past as many ports as possible please. Men are such wonderful creatures.

Yeah, you can get in. Whether they let you come back to the states is another matter.

You may be right Handy. I’d have to get some friends to sneak me over the border if that happens.
Ultress, if you are only going to Canada, then a passport is not required (I think it depends on how long you plan on staying, however). Unless you were kidding about the Canada part. My mom got a passport last year and it only took about three weeks to receive it. However, I do not recall how much she said it cost to obtain it.

First of all, do you really need a passport to go to Canada? Isn’t a driver’s license or state ID card sufficient? I would check with the INS.
If you live next to a large city with a passport agency, and are willing to wait in line, you can get a passport much faster. At Yankee Blue’s link, I found the following list of [Passport"]http://travel.state.gov/agencies_list.html]Passport](= [url="http://travel.state.gov/agencies_list.html) Agencies. It seems that many of them now require appointments.
For example, I live in the Greater Los Angeles area. When I had to renew my passport, I would go to the agency on Wilshire Boulevard, wait in line with old passport in hand (for about an hour), fill in the forms, and get the new passport after another wait.
Then a couple of years ago, a few days before leaving the country, I noticed that my passport had expired. I thought to myself “No problem! I’m leaving Saturday, I’m taking Friday off, so I’ll just go renew my passport Friday.” When I drove up to the passport agency, I was shocked by the news that from now on you had to wait two days to get your passport, and since this was Friday, I would have to wait until Tuesday. So I had to change my plane tickets (for a fee), and call my parents to tell them I would be a few days late, and then listen to their often-heard speech about the evils of procrastination.
Let’s try that again.
Passport Agencies.
The requirements for a US citizen to go to Canada are: passport, OR proof of citizenship and photo ID. A driver’s license would not in itself be sufficient, but could be used in tandem with a birth certificate.
I know that when I went to the U.S. I was required to show my passport. I also had it taken away when I went for a tour of the U.S.S. Enterprise because I was a foreigner. I didnt think I looked that bad, perhaps my hangover made me look a little greener than I had thought. However, the nice young guy with the gun did give it back to me when I left

Technically, you do not need a passport to visit Canada if you are a U.S. citizen. However, you need “proof of citizenship.”
A driver’s license or state ID card does not consitute proof of citizenship (I found this out to my surprise – fortunately, I had a voter ID card with me.) All things considered, a passport works better.
When I went to see Sue last Aug they wanted a passport. I am not sure if it was just coz Purplecrackwhore on a driver’s license was not within their realm of comprehension or if it was the company I was keeping when I got there… but after much negotiation and a strip search they let me in with just my DL…and a warning that next time I should bring a passport.
I really try to be good but it just isn’t in my nature!
But PCW you did that on purpose cuz you wanted the strip search from that cute customs guy, plus you were carrying so many bath fizzies and a ton of chocolate… so you had to get it through somehow
