My wallet was stolen last year, and with it my drivers license. My license was from the last state I lived in(NY) and just recently expired. I hadn’t gotten around to getting it replaced. Now, I’d like to get a new license from my current state (MO). But I am going to need some proof of ID. Enter the passport, which also expired last year. So, I am going to renew the passport. According to online, I can go in person, with an expired undamaged passport, and get it renewed. Now I don’t know what their definition of damaged is. Mine has been through the wash a few times, lots of air bubbles in the plastic that covers the photo. What do I do if they deem this too damaged? How can a person without official valid ID get official ID, if the requirement of getting an official ID is to have an official ID?
Get a state ID then a drivers license
For the passport, if it is damaged, you will have to have a certified birth certificate plus as many pieces of “secondary evidence of identification” as you can wrangle. This includes things like Social Security cards, library cards, credit cards, work IDs, baseball cards of you in your rookie season, etc.
No one piece of secondary ID is sufficient to prove identity, you have to present multiple pieces that can be compared.
I can’t comment on the requirements for a drivers license from Missouri.
And then there’s the funny part. Getting my passport, last year, the US State dept. accepted my Driver’s License, but rejected my “hospital issued birth cert”. It has to be county issued. Ok, I go to the county I was born in to get one, and what ID did they ask for? DL. What ID did I use, these many years ago, to get the DL in the first place? Yep, The very “hospital issued birth cert” the State dept. rejected. So, my passport was issued based on ID ultimately traceable to nothing more than the very ID they rejected. Which could have been forged, after all! I really don’t think you will have any real problems. Just lots of aggravation.
