How to locate, inspect, & clean air bag sensor on a 2006 Ford Five Hundred?

My passenger side airbag light is on. It flashes a 42 airbag code when I start the car, as follows:

flash flash flash flash
pause
flash flash
pause

It repeats a couple times, then stays lit up while the vehicle is in operation. I need to take care of this ASAP for an imminent safety inspection, but I’m moving and cash is tight. The research I’ve done indicates that minor corrosion on the contacts can cause this problem, which may be cleanable-uppable unless the pins are broken. So, if it’s not too difficult for my year make & model, I’d like to check and clean the sensor myself before taking it into a shop. I’m not repair-savvy in general, but I’m not an idiot. I can follow directions well. I successfully replaced my front headlamp bulbs on the first try, for example. :stuck_out_tongue:

So I need to know where the sensor is located, if it’s accessible without removing any major parts or jacking the car up, and how to clean it (vinegar, maybe? water on a rag? dry rag?). And would I have to disconnect my battery first? Anything else to keep in mind?

If you do not know what you are doing you can detonate the air bag. Do you have a VO-Tech school in your area? You may be able to have them see if they can repair it, they will only charge for parts. There is a forum online called Fords forum which you could try and ask for advise. Good Luck with your repair.

You locate, inspect, & clean air bag sensor on a 2006 Ford Five Hundred by taking it to a mechanic.

Airbags contain an explosive charge.

On an episode of mythbusters, they showed an airbag launching a traffic cone 30+ feet in the air.

Imagine what that amount of force would do to a screwdriver (think large bullet), or your hand as you’re working on it.

It would appear that a code 42 is for an impact sensor (located out by the front grill)
as this sensor is exposed to the weather it could be corrosion on the connector OR a bad sensor OR a totally FUBAR connector.

If you decide to tackle this yourself do this
Turn the key off
Place the key on top of the dash where you can see it
then start repairs.

the reason for turning off the key is to disable the airbag system.
The reason for putting it on top of the dash is when you get to the sensor and go to unplug it, you can look through the windshield and verify the key is off.
When you get to the sensor, unplug it and look at the pins on the sensor and connector. If they appear clean or maybe a bit whiteish plug and unplug the sensor several times. See if that makes a difference.
If on the other hand the pins are corroded, or the sensor looks like it might have water damage you will have to replace the sensor and possibly the pins in the connectors. A new sensor is no problem, but the pins in the connector are probably beyond your capabilities. If you unbolt the sensor for any reason, bolt it back up before turning the key on. Do not let it dangle.
Even after repairs you might have to have a shop clear the code (I’m not familiar with Ford’s system, on a Volvo even though the system was repaired the code and light would remain.)

Disclaimer: I am not your mechanic, you are not my customer. Internet advice is worth less than you paid for it. Do not taunt the happy fun ball. You have to gauge your abilities. You are responsible for the positive or negative outcome of the proposed repair. Screw this up and we will point and laugh at you. Airbags hurt when they hit you. You have to know when to hold them and know when to fold them. Do you feel lucky punk? Well do you?

haha! I love you a little bit, Rick. Thanks

If I have an extra key, is it okay if I put that on top of the dash instead?

I think it’s a good idea. It’s very easy for a key to slip into a defroster vent.

:dubious: You’re jerking my chain aren’t you?
