How to pronounce Krone?

How do you pronounce the Krone? (as in the Swedish currency)

The dictionary.com key wasn’t very helpful and the audio pronunciation feature requires premium membership.

Two syllables, according to the Swede I worked with a while back.

It almost sounds like “kroner” to my yanqui ears.

KROAN-uh.

Not to worry. Even my ex-wife, who was fluent in Swedish (not to mention Danish and Norwegian), said she had a hard time with “-e” and “-er” words. I certainly couldn’t tell the difference…

Uh, I found dictionary.com to be really clear. It (as Enola said) is Krone-uh, and plural is apparently kroner.

The problem is that there really isn’t an English equivalent. My advice: Split the middle between -er and -uh, if you can. Or, make like you’re saying -er, but don’t quite finish the “r”. Start it, but don’t finish it.

Krone and kroner are Danish (and possibly Norwegian). Krona and kronor are Swedish.

To a foreigner it would sound more or less the same, though.

Krona is something like [kr-own(as in to own)-a(as in attic)]

Nya, I’d rather say croon-uh (as in cut).

I would more go with crone-ah for the singular and crone-ehr for the plural. The r has hmmm… a “half-roll” on it? Like you start to roll the R but then stop…

Ok, I am terrible at explaining, here is what it sounds like. It is a 100kb .wav file, probably best to right click and “save target as”. Only a geocities site, so don’t hit it if you aren’t dying of curiosity!

Where I used to live in Skåne, they make the most of their vowels, and it ends up something like “kraowna”. Iteki may know what I’m talking about. Or maybe not!

Ah hibernicus, surely you wouldn’t do poor SoulSearching the disservice of giving him a broad Skånsk dialect?
