How to prove a debt was paid to a now-bankrupt company?

My wages are being garnished for a debt that I know I paid in 2006. When I looked up the company (Fair Financial), they’re bankrupt and the CEO is serving a 50yr sentence for fraud. How do I get proof and get this debt collector off my back now? Bank records show that money was paid to the company, but nothing more.

The fact you were sued and lost is working against you. Were you served and how did you respond?

Did you pay by check or other instument showing account number?

How long ago was the judgement? There is an opening for you to respond post facto (I did it once, CA), it you have a really good excuse for not responding. This assumes a default judgement was entered.

If you are already being garnished, it is likely that you were sued and either lost at trial or had a default judgment entered against you. It is also likely that the time to appeal that judgment has expired, leaving you with limited options–pay the judgment, live with the garnishment until the judgment is paid in full, or file bankruptcy.
