In a thread about the P3/F8 mid-air collision I mentioned that during the German campaign in Russia, the Soviet pilots would ram the Luftwafe planes because they had run out of ammo.
I’ve done several web searches and found several references to it happening, but no real documention. Does anyone have any good links or references to this? How effective was it and how many Soviet pilots were killed trying it? I read about pilots landing their plans after ramming the Germans, so the Yak fighters must have been pretty tough.
I thought for sure this was a post on bestiality!!
IIRC, the Yak was a pretty tough plane.
Tangent:
Once in the Pacific, a Corsair (biggest engine available in the smallest airframe that’d hold it) was chasing a Japanese Zero (small, lightly armored) when his guns froze up. So the Corsair pilot came up from behind and edged his 14’ diameter steel propeller into the Zero’s wood-and-fabric rudder. The Zero went down with control problems; the Corsair kept on flying.
What you are referring to is called a “Taran” attack. You can get lots of information on it by looking for “Taran Attack” on google. Two of the web sites I found are:
http://www.btinternet.com/~brianyeates/brianyeates/taran.htm
and for a story about a pilot famous for doing this
http://www.elknet.pl/acestory/luganski/luganski.htm
Those should at least put you on the path to finding any information on the web.
Thanks, that’s exactly what I was looking for. Looks like a tough way to earn (urn?) a living.
