How to Scrub a Computer . . .

When one leaves a job and does not wish to take a high powered magnet to the hard drive of one’s otherwise innocent desktop, how would one go about ensure that nothing is left on the desktop? My *.pst files are backed up on the server so email and contacts are not lost, mores the pity, but what about documents, websites, cookies, temp files.

I do periodically use a program called Purge IE. Should I do more upon leaving?

Just take the HD with you. Buy another HD, they are pretty cheap these days. I just figure the cost of the HD Vs. my having peace of mind

      • There’s an open source/freeware program named Eraser that renders disk data practically unrecoverable. I like it a lot. Big Hint: Eraser wipes free disk space a lot faster if you do a full defrag/optimize first. http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/
  • Eraser doesn’t wipe temp cache files like the ones that IE and Outpook keep, tho’. So you’d need something to do them first, then empty the recycle bin, and then you’d follow up with Eraser.
