I’m replacing the fixtures in my tub and shower, and purchased a nice moen kit that had a shower head, shower faucet, and tub spout.
When I took it home, low and behold it is a screw on spout, and my old spout was slip fit, thus I didn’t have the male end on the spout pipe.
I tried looking for other moen shower kits (because I want to keep them matching finish) but none of the kits had the type of tub spout listed on the box. I can’t find it on their web site either. Same for some other brands I looked.
Is there any way to tell the type of spout BEFORE purchasing the item and taking them home and opening them?
Moen’s unique name for slip fit seems to be “CC” and they also use the more universal term “IPS” to indicate one that screws on.
Some makers offer universal fit spouts with IPS threads and a setscrew for slip-fit.
There are adapters that will let you put a screw-on spout onto your slip-fit pipe end. Here’s the first one I found on a quick search.
Another option I’ve seen is to install a “sharkbite” fitting with the appropriate male threads onto the pipe stub sticking out of the wall, but you’ll need to measure the length carefully and be sure the sharkbite fitting will fit inside the spout.
yes, I found the adapter, unfortunately, one of the reviews states that it doesn’t work with the model spout that I have
Also, I do know about the sharkbite fittings but I read they don’t work so well in this application.
Aside from that, I know what all the fix actions are to covert from slip fit to screw on, and I can do that, but I just want to look at a model of fittings and be able to tell which one it is without emailing the manufacturer over and over.
Last year we replaced all our chrome bathroom fixtures with brushed nickel. I went out and bought a new (Moen) spout, which turned out to be a screw-on, and then discovered our spout was slip-fit. I had the same problem you do, being unable to find the right fitting (with the right finish).
My solution, finally, was to clean up the chrome spout really well, lightly sand it, and cover it with brushed nickel spray paint. Worked great.
Yeah it’s really annoying to not tell which type of spout is in the package. Also, Home Depot and Lowes do not carry the adapter that the link to Amazon shows, not sure why.
Also not sure why there is just not ONE type of friggin’ spout!
Anyway, the good news is i guessed I bothered Moen enough that they are shipping me a new tub spout that is slip-fit, and should match the ones I have already. And they are shipping free of charge, so that part worked out. Now to just install it!
