How much did hollywood add? I did like the whole “Talking on Christmas” idea… But I do kinda doubt that happened… And same for the escape from the plane…
The “talking on Christmas” thing never happened, but that’s all that one can say for sure. Hanks and the others (including the man DiCaprio’s character’s based on) all give conflicting stories about what’s real in the film and what’s made up. Apparently, they’ve all agreed to carry the deceptive nature of the film over into their promotions of the film. Even the book the film’s based on should be considered suspect.
If the book can be believed, then the escape
assuming he gets off the plane through the toilet
did happen.
Seems to me they actually left out more stuff than they added. The one thing in the book that they left out of the movie was when he talked himself out of jail (in Georgia I believe). They let him walk right out the door after he convinced them he was a Federal Agent working undercover to investigate civil rights violations within the prison. That would have been a great scene! I wish they hadn’t cut it.
From the other CMIYC thread:

In short, the movie tells a somewhat different story from the book. And neither is 100% complete or accurate.
Thanks, I believe that covers my questions well enough.
