As others have pointed out, George Santos is not representing a district full of rednecks. New York’s 3rd District is a wealthy suburban enclave which was represented by a Democrat for the five elections prior to 2022. It’s a district where a Republican talks about cutting tax rates not owning the libs. These people are the libs.
You’re wrong. The ticket to a continued career within the modern GOP is attacking people who live in other parts of the world. You don’t attack the voters in your own district.
He’s not going to be re-elected in this district or any other district. Because he will have the same problems that any other Republican from the NYC area will have if he tries to run anywhere outside of that area - which is basically that the Republicans in the rest of the country don’t see them as Republicans.
I don’t feel it’s unreasonable to think that a person who ran for the Congressional seat in New York’s 3rd District has a desire to be the Congressman from New York’s 3rd District.
I realize there are some people who feel the primary goal of the Republican party is to attack liberals. These people need to get over themselves. Other people are not making you the center of their world.
Republicans are looking out for what’s in their own best self-interests. They attack liberals when it’s a useful tactic in getting elected. But when it’s not a useful tactic - for example, if they’re running in a district that fits the liberal stereotype - then they won’t use that tactic. Unless they’re an idiot.
So George Santos makes a dog whistle appeal to right wing racists. There are two possibilities. The first is that Santos is playing fourth dimensional chess and has a plan that involves attacking the voters in his own district. The second is that Santos is an idiot.
This is what we learned from Donald Trump’s presidency. When a right winger does something that seems to be stupid, don’t look for some secret plan that would make it not stupid. The likeliest explanation is that what they did was as stupid as it appeared.
You don’t need four-dimensional chess to turn “former Congressman” into some other lucrative line of business, most of which don’t care about any particular constituency. He could become a radio-show host, or write a book, or go on the speaking circuit, or join a think tank, or any combination of those.
Or being a very insecure person his new bestie, MTG, one of the few in the House willing to be seen with him, may have just dared him to it, nay double dog dared him!
I’ll accept that he may have accepted that endearing himself to the nut jobs may be his best path after this gig, be it two years or kicked out sooner. Especially given who his new PR person is.
Can’t he be both? I mean, if we’re talking about Santos, dude is obviously a pathological liar, and possibly a narcissist. Doesn’t mean he’s not a racist shithead, of course. (Besides, not everyone who’s mentally ill is necessarily legally insane)
What’s going to be hilarious will be a few years from now when Santos tells people he was elected to Congress and everyone that knows him will be saying “Sure you were, George. Was that before or after you defeated Thanos?”
