Doubt it – unlike the perception of douchewags like the folks in this shop, cops are professionals. Yeah, I’m sure there is a great deal of “Fine, see if we come when you need us” talk, but no cop is seriously going to drag their feet when a robbery is in progress just so they can prove this dickhead right.
…
And not only that, if the cops were to show up late, even justifiably, they’d catch a lot of slack from the public accusing them of purposely taking to long to respond.
It would be more fun to park outside for hours.
Then if anybody asks about them parking outside, the two cops in the car could say they were discussing the ethical and sociopolitical ramifications of attempting to order a coffee in an anarchist coffee shop, and that the only reason they had been parked outside the shop for so long was because every time they voted on whether to go in - it was a tie.
“FAIR? Who’s the fucking nihilists here? What are you, a bunch of fucking crybabies?”
It was a lame thing and toolish thing for the store owner to do, but let’s not over do it. The cop wasn’t denied service, and comparisons to Jim Crow are over the top. Cops are not perscuted minorities because some scrawny vegan asked one to take his coffee outside. I doubt the cop himself got more than a moment of bemusement out of it.
By the way, I like how self-serving both versions of the story are. The cop was delayed going out the door because a woman wanted to tell him what a hero he was. Heh.
So, the indigents are not homeless anymore, they’re “houseless”?
I don’t really have a problem with an anarchist not wanting a police officer in his store. It doesn’t sound like he was breaking any laws, so I suppose he has a right to be a jerk.
What I object to is the shopkeeper using his AUTHORITY to IMPOSE his WILL on another HUMAN BEING. It is SOOOOOOO like a member of the CAPITALIST PATRIARCHY to tell a FEMALE MEMBER OF society that she cannot speak with CERTAIN OTHER PEOPLE who ARE hanging around the SToRE! But, like, that’s just my opinion, MAN.
Pass the lentils, please.
I’m sure the distinction means something to vegan-anarchist cafetistas.
The woman was a freelancer for the local paper. She’s the one who publicized the story on her blog and in a newspaper column, apparently. So it wasn’t self-serving on the cop’s part.
I can’t really see how it’s self-serving on the anarchist cafe’s part. It’s just weird.
If you allowed just anyone to sit there drinking coffee, you’d have total anarchy.
The problem with your argument is that it’s two dots, and you have left it to me to connect them.
“Yes, Bricker, each of your examples is true, because each example fails to mention a protected class as defined by my citation.”
Is that what you meant to say?
Why don’t you explain what you meant to say befiore you demand that other s do it?
Protected classes don’t matter anyway because the cop was not denied service.
I have a policeman friend who makes it a practice never to order any open food or drink while in uniform (i.e., anything not pre-wrapped or bottled). Too much opportunity for adulteration.
Also, it seems particularly stupid to ask a cop to leave your establishment while he is leaving. It’s not like he sat down at a table to nurse his coffee - he was exchanging pleasantries with someone on his way out.
Also, that second pic that was linked to above – is that a group picketing the cafe? Because it looks like one of the signs says “Boycott Red and Black.”
So, am I supposed to believe that this police officer that was born and raised in Portland just innocently wanted a cup of coffee and had no idea the type of establishment that he was walking into and the probably reaction that he would cause? Really?
Motherfucker was stirring the pot and knew it.
Also, Shodan, there is a huge difference between this incident and Jim Crow and you should know that. All of this boils down to distribution of power. The cops have power, the people don’t. There is absolutely no parity with Jim Crow laws here. Give me a break.
People that are paying attention to what cops are doing these days? People that are aware of what society is becoming?
If an anarchist had walked into a cafe and was told to leave, how would they feel?
I suspect they’d be crying “discrimination” as loudly as they could.
Someone should make a rule: You shouldn’t treat others in ways you wouldn’t want to be treated. Maybe name it after silver or platinum or some other precious metal.
Well, if you’re gonna put words in my mouth they might as well be the words that were obviously intended. So, we cool.
The cops are… buying coffee? And paying for it? And making pleasant conversation? To the barricades!
Do you think they’d sell the cop a donut too?
They certainly look like a bunch of middle class douchebags. But dude I would totally boink the blonde in the chair.
This is just disturbing. People patronizing public accommodations should not be asked to leave on the basis of superficial biases. Now I’m wondering what characteristics of mine might trigger someone to ask me to leave a place.
These anarchists are clearly assholes.
