How We Get From Here To Internment Camps

You know, recently, some of your posts have been a voice of calm reason around here.

You’re freaking me out. Stop it.

It would depend on how quickly things move. If Trump tried to register Muslims his first days in office, the backlash would be enormous, people would be standing in line to register as Muslim whether they were on not.

Now if he slowly takes away one liberty at a time, and there is a major terror event, things can happen we never imagined. Like a frog being slowly boiled most people just going along with their lives and not paying attention to each days new recreational outrage could be blindsided after it was too late to do anything but hope you can help hide a family.

Only about 18% of Americans voted for Trump, to be precise. ~60M/~330M = 0.1818…

^This.

It’s not as if it’s never happened before.

People want to believe that ‘nothing ever really changes’—and we go on believing that even in the face of drastic changes, if they are presented incrementally enough or with big enough lies to let us rationalize what’s going on and comfort ourselves that it won’t make much difference to us. We are very, very good at selective attention and motivated reasoning.

It would be rather moving to see that sort of I Am Spartacus result. But on the whole I hope it doesn’t come to that. I believe Muslims WILL be the Trump regime’s first (though not last) set of scapegoats. But I still hold out a bit of hope that Trump will reveal himself so decisively before December 19 that the electors will vote as the Constitution set out (as individuals rather than as they’ve been in modern practice, as a rubber stamp). Trump would have to be caught revealing himself pretty unmistakably, though.

Have you heard what some of the protesters have been saying this past week? There are decent-sized groups of nutbags on both sides.

Clearly so, based on the results of the election.

Oh yes, the talking heads cluck their tongues and shake their heads and pontificate about how wrong it is – after playing Trump’s speeches almost in full, and respectfully interviewing his minions while acting as if their ideas aren’t completely reprehensible. I seriously doubt most of the people working at those networks wanted Trump to win the election either, but they still felt compelled to portray it as a neck-and-neck race by playing up Hillary’s BS e-mail scandal while treating Trump like a serious candidate instead of a bad joke. And now, here we are.

There, there. Calm down.

Trump isn’t even in office yet, and already they’re laying the groundwork:

We’ll see how the public and the media react to this. If people get mad and say, loud and proud, they won’t stand for this, and Trump actually backs down on it, then I will sleep a little easier. If, after a brief outcry, the American public loses interest and lets him get away with it, then that is step one in the process of rounding up Muslims taken care of.

That doesn’t mean “step two” and beyond is inevitable, but it makes it a hell of a lot more likely. We shall see.

It’s “their, they’re.” Get it right. :stuck_out_tongue:

And had the media ignored Trump, his win would have been even more surprising to those who live in their little media bubble.

Slee

This.

Suppose Don the Con actually does this. What’s your guess on the penalties for registering as a Muslim if you aren’t one? Because I (currently an atheist, but baptized RC years ago) would likely register.

Hopefully, a combination of people speaking out against it and civil disobedience (non-Muslims registering to create static) will derail the whole thing. Depends on how determined the Trumpites are.

There’s a good article at Cracked.com about this very thing today. I’ll list his 4 points:

#4. The Open Racism Stops Suddenly
#3. He’ll Rein In His Most Violent Supporters
#2. He Remakes The Military
#1. He Builds An Infrastructure For Oppression

The author, Robert Evans, cites much from the book The Nazi Conscience by Claudia Koonz, a historian and professor at Duke University. IMO he makes a good case of what to watch for and why, using Hitler’s rise to power as a reference point.

I know Cracked.com is a humor site, but they’ve also been tackling a lot of social issues in the past couple of years and for the most part I think they do an excellent job of researching and making their point.

As Joe Bob Briggs would say, “check it out”.

Cracked is good except when it tries to go political, then they let their ideology get the best of them. This article is bullshit.
Comparing 1930s Germany and 2016 US is not apples and oranges, it’s apples and turtles.
#4 - So, this is can’t-win for DT. He goes racist: Hitler. He goes full-Mandela: Hitler.

#3 - Same as 4. He let’s violence unchecked: Hitler. He stops the violence: Hitler.

#2 - Who’d be the “Prussian Generals” here? SA? Hitler wanted to invade other countries, lebensraum and all that shit.

#1 - Internment camps? Boycotting Muslim businesses. In the Internet era they’d get swamped with orders.

I’m not saying DT is angel, he’s a bombastic buffon prone to say stupid (sometimes dangerous) things. Making him Hitler even before his done one thing is to preemptively poison the well.

There’s another example though. In Rwanda, vast numbers of ordinary people were incited to take up weapons (machetes and clubs, mainly) and kill their neighbors. They didn’t even need an industrial killing operation, just men on the radio telling them where the enemy was and encouraging them to “cut the tall trees!” IIRC, close to a million were killed in 90 days. Not even the Nazis matched that rate. And we in 2017 America wouldn’t have to rely solely on radio and machetes. We have the internet, smart phones, and lots and lots of guns.

Do I think it will happen? No. But last summer I didn’t think we’d elect Trump either. Turns out we’re not the people I thought we were.

It’s a good thing that the author stresses with each point that he doesn’t believe we’re there or that it is likely to occur, eh? He’s simply listing things to watch for and if we see those things, be even more watchful for the next.

He revealed himself many years ago. It didn’t matter to a lot of people.

What would be the point of putting them in camps? Much better to remove them from America. Those who are not US citizens could be deported to their home countries. Those who were could be offered a financial incentive to move to a Muslim country, and perhaps deals made with Muslim countries to accept them.

So, then , it’s a simplistic shock piece; Trump-talk.
You don’t write an article like that if you don’t believe it; he’s using a cop out.
It’s like writing an article “4 Reason Mike’s Wife Might be a Two-bit Whore” and then say “I don’t believe Mike’s wife is a two-bit or that she will become one, I’m just sayin’ pay attention”.
