USA: 150/150 Had to guess on Vermont, but now I know it’s the one shaped like a V.
Europe: 131/138 I’ve been to almost every country in Europe, but I was in Yugoslavia before it split up, so I get all those countries screwed up.
Asia: 92/96 Man, those -stans are tough.
Africa: 105/162 I couldn’t even remember the ones that it told me when I got it wrong.
South America: 38/39 Can never figure out those 3 little countries next to Venezuela (the only ones I haven’t been to).
85 - considering I have no interest in US geography I didn’t think that was too bad.
States: 150/150 - had a puzzle when I was little, I know them by shape, only problem is Wyoming & Colorado were exactly the same shape.
As far as Europe - in my defense, when I learned that area of the world, a lot of that map was one big country labeled “USSR.” And Random thanks, I was wondering why a country would call itself “The Former Yugoslav Republic”
US States: 150/150
US Cities: 469/474 Some odd choices for major cities there.
Canada: 39/39
S. America: 39/39
Caribbean: 66/66
Central America: 42/42
Australia: 24/24
Europe: 135/138 The Yugoslavia one seems misleading to me.
Asia 88/96: damn 'stans got me, too
Middle East:71/74 …and damn if I didn’t turn right around and blow a couple of the damn 'stans again…
I didn’t bother with Africa or Oceania, because I’d likely flunk…
I did so badly!
US States: 58/150
Europe: 101/138
US, 150/150
Europe, 128/138.
The map of Europe sure has changed a lot since I learned it in 1981. That’s my excuse. What’s a Moldova?
I think it’s what happens to cheese when you leave it in the back of the fridge too long…?
You too, huh?
Got 135/138 on the Europe quiz. Only lost points because they listed the 2 parts of Russia separately (wtf!?) and I mixed up Lithuania & Liechtenstein.
149/150 I coulda sworn Arkansas was just to the east of Louisiana. Clicked on Mississippi.
Got all the States, and all the State Capitals. I’m ready to go on Jeopardy.
Huh, I thought I was fairly well-traveled, within the US at least, but seemingly not so much. (States, I know where they are. ‘Major Cities’ - not so much.) Er, 'nuff said.
150 out of 150
…but for me, the catch is this; show me a map with just the state lines and no labels, and I’m fine. Ask me to visualize where things are in my head, and I have a much harder time with some areas.
Heh, just did their Asia one and got 93 out of 96. Mixed up Kyrghyzstan and Uzbekistan at first, and had a brainfart and clicked Maldives by accident when it asked Nepal which dinged me a point.
Cool website, thanks for the link!
Sorry for the triple post. I decided to go ahead with the other country questions, and I’m pretty pleased with the results. I’m not gonna try the capitols any time soon, though.
Well, I got an almost perfect score on South America (damn Uruguay and Paraguay), and the Middle East got me a 74 out of 75 (mixed up Syria and Lebanon for a second). The Central America one got me 41 out of 42 (DR and Haiti, of course).
Europe went poorly. Southeastern Europe kicked my ass. I knew most of Europe perfectly, but the area bounded by Italy, Austria, Hungary, Greece, Turkey and the Ukraine was a big mystery to me. But hey, now I know it, so consider ignorance fought! :o
I’m not even going to try Australia and Oceania; I know Australia, NZ, and Papua New Guinea. The (other) Islands? …No F-ing clue. Similarly, I don’t know the Caribbean beyond Trinidad and Tobago, and the parts covered in the Central American quiz, nor do I care to.
Africa’s another one I’ll need to study, as I know virtually none of it (I could probably tell you the territories on the Risk map from memory, though). Oddly enough, I did know Lesotho and Swaziland off the top of my head. And the two countries with Congo in the name (though remembering which is which is a separate matter).
So I get “Russia (Kaliningrad)” and I click on Russia … “No, that’s Russia.”
What’s Kaliningrad? Is that a stupid question?
Kalingrad is the tiny noncontiguous area of Russia west of Belarussia and Lithuania.
Formerly known as Konigsburg (sp?), it was the seat of the original Prussian kingdom, as there was a large German population there at the time. After WWI that part of the German Empire was ceded away, and later on, it remained a part of Russia when Lithuania was made autonomous due to strategic concerns. Of course, that’s all off the top of my head, at 5:45 AM after being up since 9:30 AM the previous morning. :dubious:
Meh, according to wikipedia I got that one pretty wrong. It, along with Prussia/East Prussia remained a part of Germany, though separated by much of modern-day Poland, after WWI. After WWII it was held by Russia and incorporated into the Soviet Union. The military-strategic justification for their continued control of the city was correct.
Koenigsberg (sue me, I don’t know how to type umlauts, so I use the +e cheat my highschool german teacher taught me back in '99). I was thinking “burg” as in city, not “berg” as in mountain.
This screwed me up too. I saw Yugoslavia and just went for Serbia, because it kept onto the name for awhile. When I got it wrong, I realized I just needed to scroll down to see the Macedonia bit. Which is so stupid, of course I know where Macedonia is, it’s right next to Bulgaria.
Other than that, I got a perfect score on the Europe quiz. Although it’s just pure luck that I got the Baltic states right.
148 on the US states. I got Kansas and Nebraska mixed up, and then Virgina and Maryland, which was totally a brain fart.
Better than ignoring the umlaut altogether.
(I use word, then cut and paste.)
