How white are you?

Is there a way to take that “test” without manually jotting down all the items? I thought you could check the little boxes to the left of each item, but apparently not.

My favorite, though, was: black music that black people don’t listen to anymore.

Well, I dint know if it’s white thing in terms of skin color - being white did not really help me in Balkans - but it is a good list as a cultural reference as I can definitely say that with the exception of few items (25, 30, 52, 66, 107, 118 and for 75 I’m in Canada so double points) the list contains things that my individual and social world is made of and that I either inhabit or perceive myself as being an inhabitant of that world.

I assume the point of the site is to poke gentle self-referential fun at left-leaning urban middle to upper middle class types who are likely to be earnestly concerned about issues of systemic racism, whether they are “White” or not.

The sense of uneasiness in the viewer about there being a list of stereotypical “stuff White people like” is part of the joke, as is the fact that the list is composed of stereotypes pointed at the sort of person who could be made uneasy in that manner.

Isn’t the author a white dude?

He looks like the sort of fellow who’d make me want to punch him after thirty seconds but I’m not convinced he’s some anti-white racist.

I came across an online dating profile where she provided a link to Stuff White People Like in her self summary, with a note that it pretty much all applied to her. I identified with more than half of that list myself.

Well, I’m pretty well pale and white like a fishbelly, and this is what I can check off:

#128 Camping

#126 Vespa Scooters
#123 Mad Men
#122 Moleskine Notebooks

So, I guess that makes sense.

Wait, what? Why is this on the white people list?

They forgot:
#135 - website pols that don’t let you select each item and then count them up for you.

So that’s at least one, anyway.

Right. It isn’t saying that all white people are like that. It is making fun off the archetype of the educated, urban, liberal person (and that is a group that really needs to be made fun of more IMO). It isn’t talking about rednecks or cowboys or white trash or factory workers. It is creating a list of the things that the ideal specimen that stereotype would possess sort of like how they judge dogs in a show against the breed standard.

Like all stereotypes, there is some degree of truth to it. The white people from my home town in Louisiana would score terribly but I know quite a few people here in the Boston area that could cut and copy any part of that list to describe themselves perfectly.

I lam white and I like:

What it is, bro?

18/134 So I’m 7.4% white? That doesn’t jibe with my German/English ancestry. But I think the site is amusing in a poke-fun-at-me way.

I am so white I pretty much glow in the dark, and I don’t like most everything on the list. I found 11 things I liked …

I’m only half white but I’m really white according to that site. What that means is that I’m uppity, I guess… LOL!

I’m a middle-aged Latina, but I guess I’m whiter than I thought, for what that’s worth. I like:

#133 The World Cup (keeps my dad and other male relatives busy for a few weeks, plus it's fun to look at all the hot guys on the various national teams)
#127 Where the Wild Things Are (love that book since I was a kid learning English)

#125 Bob Marley (the soundtrack for summer barbecues among my siblings)

Wow. For a minute I was afraid someone might take it too seriously…

I didn’t claim all left wing metropolitans were poseurs. Hit a nerve?

This site would be better named as something like "stuff white liberals like (or pretend to).

I’ve enjoyed SWPL for years now. It’s humorous, though sometimes he tries too hard and misses.

What the OP linked to is a table of contents basically. It’s just a numerical list of his articles, or columns, or whatever you want to call them. It’s not a test to see how you rank or how white you are.

Pretty damn white
