How will the switch to clean car fuel work

It is only a matter of time before autos are powered by a different fuel source. Doing this requires alot of changing infrastructure however. Is there a pattern that will be followed in the transition away from oil and onto another fuel source? How did the transition from horses to autos work originally, and didn’t that transition take about 50 years to complete?

There’s certainly never been anything like it before, and it may actually be the case that, rather than a transition to fuelling cars differently, it could be a transition to not using them at all. It is not a foregone conclusion that there will be a fuel source to replace oil in all applications.

In the same sort of way, I don’t think the transition from horses to cars is much of a model; you could just as easily call it the advent of cars and ignore the horses altogether - car use is such a massive phenomenon, I’m not sure it makes much sense to be labelling it a descendant of horse-based travel.
