How would one go about finding an autopsy report?

For a family member.

As far as I can tell, there is no official coroner in Michigan and I can’t find any information online for the county in question. How would I even start with something like this?

Also, will they send me a copy in the mail? I don’t live in Michigan any more.

Contact the police department or DAs office where they died and ask them.

Also remember there might not be an autopsy unless it were medically necessary or the death were suspicious. Non-accidental (ie old age, disease etc) related deaths by obvious or natural causes are ofen not autopsied.

Here is what I found for Kalamazoo County. It cites state law on the medical examiner’s authority and the kinds of cases that are referred for autopsy.

I’d start with the clerk’s office in the county where the person died. Someone can tell you how to reach the ME’s office, who can then tell you how to request the report. Since most legal matters can be settled with a death certificate, you may be asked why you want a copy of the autopsy report.
