How would the police handcuff a one-armed man?

Police don’t handcuff suspects to keep them from running away, they handcuff them to keep them from doing any mischief with their hands, such as striking someone or grabbing an officer’s gun.

whuckfistle, what’s with the backwards apostrophes?

handcuffing them in the back makes it harder to run

[OT]

That is just fascinating. Ghanans have specific names that say which gender the person is and which day of the week that person was born on? Amazing.

What would the name for a male born on Wednesday be?

[/OT]

Walloon, smy trademark. (Like the name alone isnt enough.) I suppose if I ever changed usernames the apostrophe thing would stay.

WOW, 7.5 hours and no answer in sight.

ekow: Thank you. That’s very interesting.

whuckfistle: I think you’ve been answered as well as you can be. Things like this require situation-specific information and really can’t be reduced to trivial rules.

The police always go by the motto “Armless, but not harmless!”, and cuff unidexterans to a stationary object until they need to be moved.

How long is the chain connecting the wrists? Maybe they could loop it around his leg and connect both bracelets to the same arm.

Wouldn’t they just use leg irons and tie one arm around his waist like they do with two armed people in leg irons?

Somebody already asked this a while back. I’m sure of it.
I’m gettin’ old.

How would they restrain someone with no arms?

Aha!
I feel much younger now.

He’s naturally handcuffed then. An armless guy would have the same threat level and range of motions as a handcuffed guy anyway.

I think a armless person would be much more accustomed to it and therefore more dangerous than a handcuffed one.

From mangeorge’s link: at least one cop said he’d cuff to the perp’s belt.

I just called my buddy who’s an L.A. patrolman. He concurred, and has done it before.

Bonus round. If the perp’s nekkid or not wearing a belt, my friend’s says procedure dictates that he be:
[]Ankle-cuffed and manacled (sometimes requires a special police unit since not all cruisers are equipped).[]Cuffed to tie-off points inside the squad car, presuming he’s neither violent nor under the influence.Cuffed to the wall of a transport, commonly called a “paddy wagon.”
If he’s not wearing a belt, and he’s not wearing pants, I’m pretty sure I could effectively restrain him.

This method would work with regular Smith and Wesson or equivalent handcuffs, and would probably be more efficient than just cuffing the wrists together.

It would require a great deal of explanation, some latex gloves, a departmental hearing, a civil suit, and some serious hazing in the locker room, but buddy wouldn’t be swinging that arm around. Not more than once, anyway.

Please elaborate! I’m sure my L.A. cop-friend could use the insight.

BTW: if you’re talking about securing his one arm to his privates, S&W cuffs close fully – short of elephantiasis – with a generally testicularly-escapable aperture. Of course, you could be meaning you’d manacle his entire machinery, twig ‘n’ berry?

In a GQ thread?

I meant enclosing the whole works, and I’m curious as to how you know that the S&W M100 would allow for escape, but as this is GQ I suspect we ought to just drop the entire subject before we get in trouble, if it’s not too late.
