Unfortunately, it’s not the exposed pipes inside the house that are frozen. They’re the ones under the house.
I had this brilliant idea to get the cold water running in the tub: The drywall opposite the faucet had been opened. I’ll just take the panel off and aim the space heater at the pipes. Only it turns out that they had been replaced with the plastic pipes that (are supposed to ) expand instead of crack. Plastic is a poor conductor of heat.
LOL! Why does everyone think Seattle is the only city in the state? It’s not even the capital for cripes sake!
Yes, it actually snows south of Seattle. I’m about thirty miles southeast of it. Olympia is hmmm, 50 or so miles south of Seattle. Even further south, approximately halfway between the Oregon border and Olympia, they got two feet of snow!
Hmmm, it might be my fault it’s snowing so much. a.) I HATE the darned stuff. b.) I’ve been considering selling my 4x4. Like dopers upthread, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to work from home (though it’s with some east coast coworkers which means my day starts at 5am…argghh). The good news is it’s in my PJs. I don’t even think I’ve brushed my hair all week.
They do. I’ll just remind you it needs to be done.
You probably need the moisture barrier checked/replaced and insulation around all the holes into the house. (pipes, phone, electric.) Your house will hold heat better, lowing your utility bills. It will also prevent vermin from entering. (Didn’t you have a mouse last fall?)
You could actually have it done once it’s a bit drier outside.
I think Olympia is the name of that town where Ikea is, down on the south end of lake Washington, I’m pretty sure if they had multi-story buildings you could see Portland from there.
Tomorrow is another snow day for the schools. They called it around 6:00pm. We’re getting really tired of the bambinas all home all day. Cabin fever for all even though the sledding today was “the bestest ever.”
Here near the Bellevue Square area we only have 2-3 inches of snow but there is a layer of ice on all roads. There must have been at least 20 people in the Bellevue Square when we went to McD’s walking home from sledding in downtown park.
[Raises hand] I do! I do! (My mother was born in Steilacoom, and spent her summers at her grandfather’s farm on McNeil Island before the Feds kicked all the civilians out.)
More to the point, I’m in the same general area as Taters (how close depends on whether “30 miles south” or “30 miles southeast” is more accurate). This afternoon I swept 7 inches off my car, and it’s collected another inch or two since. With temps below freezing tonight, the morning commute should be a real treat.
Yeah Taters it snows north of Seattle too! I’m in Marysville, just north of Everett and we have 18 inches of the white stuff in the yard. The road has not been graded or sanded, so I am stuck at home, although fortunately there is a neighborhood store a block away. The forecast is calling for more white stuff through Thursday night. Now I love snow, and I have always wished for it on my birthday. I doubt it will stick around until next week, but this has been close enough to warm the cockles of my heart!
I know where Steilacoom is, far down the coast from me. I have had occasion to take the ferry from there to visit a relative a time or two. Not the best memories!
Wow, that’s going back a few years. I was back recently and noticed how much things have changed since I was a kid, but that’s probably nothing compared to you grandfather. I remember when the ice rink collapsed. Now, not many people even know it was ever there.
(I grew up in Oakbrook, not actually Steilacoom, but it’s the closest convenient landmark. Well, there’s Western State Hospital, which I did not cite for obvious reasons. I did deliver a few pizzas there, though.)
I woke up to over 8 inches of snow in my yard this morning. I live 8 miles north of Ocean Shores, right on the beach. The City closed all offices today for all employees not classified as “essential”. Normally I would say that being a Court Administrator is not an essential position under these circumstances. However, today was definitely not normal circumstances since it was supposed to be our court day. We hold court once a month and generally have 200 defendants, give or take a few. I got to the office about 7 am and stayed until 5 trying to get in contact with as many court peeps as possible. On my trip in to the office, I was breaking trail nearly all the way from my house. On the way home we were down to mostly slush and freezing rain. They’re predicting freezing rain overnight, so I’m sure a great deal of fun awaits us tomorrow!
According to Washington State Patrol, they responded to 700+ accidents on highways today. One county had 214 accidents in a 4 hour stretch. Yuck.
I lived in Alaska for many years and I trust my driving, but there are a tremendous amount of people who definitely should not be on the road!
Yup, I know where Steilacoom is . I have friends that live there. I’ve actually lived up here in the PNW since 1970. I’ve very familiar with this area.
Otto, I live in the South Hill area.
Another free day off for me due to the icy road conditions. The snow here, which never melted, is now completely iced over and large branches are coming down everywhere due to the weight of the ice and snow. I was prepared to go in if I had to, but thankfully, our command saw fit to put safety first.
