The weather is all over the local news this morning. The radar shows yellow and red over the whole region. There have been two inches of rain since midnight.
It snowed about eight inches up here Saturday and Sunday. So I’m glad for the heavy rain, as it will melt most of it. Wouldn’t want to be out in it, but Monday is my telecommuting day.
We got snow. Lots of snow, all across Canada. And we’re getting more snow. I understand the American midwest got it pretty bad, too. Reports on TV from weather pundits are speculating that we’re in for the harshest winter we’ve had in at least 15 years, due in large part to the fact that recent winters have been warmer than usual.
I guess Mother Nature’s been slacking, and the big guy finally told her to STFU and GBTW.
We had extreme weather warnings for yesterday morning - it was forecast to be very windy - I don’t think it was quite as bad as the forecast (I think the BBC tends to have a bit of a hair trigger now, after the 1987 storm thing, which is famously misunderstood anyway).
I went to the beach.
Our intention was to sit in the car and just watch the waves crashing, but my kids had other ideas.
Heh. Reminds me of riding my Enduro in the western part of the Mojave Desert (Antelope Valley). The streets are in a North-South, East-West grid. I’d have a definite list to port (or starboard, depending on whether I was riding south or north) riding along 60th St. W in 40-knot winds.
Wow. Looks like Seattle is a mess. The news just said that he heard a PIREP of 120 kt winds aloft.
Can’t log into my office via VPN. I think my password expired, and I need to log in to change it. Can’t raise anyone in the office. Maybe they’re closed due to the hazardous conditions? But I’d think I’d be notified. (Of course they could have sent me an email – to the account I can’t log into.) At least I have a stack of papers I can work on today. But no way will it last me ten hours.
Yeah, there’s a storm. I kind of enjoyed Saturday’s snow, but now it’s turned to rain so everything’s completely soaked, including my dogs when they come in from outside. And now, of course, we’ve got The Wind coming in- I just heard that the coast can expect gusts up to 100mph. Yowza.
A mouse sneezing nearby can knock my power out, so I imagine the gusts are going to make today *very *interesting.
I didn’t hear anything about power outages downtown. I’ve been up since 4:30 AM (hubby works today) I haven’t noticed any wind to speak of here (4 miles north of Children’s Hospital)
I guess Gray’s Harbor county is totally blacked out. they’ve had wind gusts in the 80s.
No one called to say hubby hadn’t made it to work, but when I tried to call a little while ago, there was no answer at the station house. He’s in Auburn.
Of course, they might just be out saving lives and alleviating suffering.
Is that on 9th & Stewart? My office is in Belltown near 3rd & Blanchard.
Just got off the phone with my officemate. She was an hour late getting in. VPN was indeed a password issue. She changed my p/w for me and I can connect via VPN now. So I have plenty of work for the rest of the day.
One of my officemates is home from work today because the neighbor’s swimming pool is overflowing and flooding his crawlspace. It’s been solid precipitation with only brief breaks for 24 hours.
Johnny L.A., the Children’s Hospital picunurse was speaking of is just east of the University District. They do research and other good stuff at their new 9th and Stewart location.
Anyway, down near Sea-Tac airport, it’s just wet. Wet, wet, wet. And getting wetter. No wind yet to speak of but I know that can change quickly. I wonder where the first mudslides will be this year?
My thanks to folks like picunurse’s hubby who are out there in this weather helping those in need!
We were supposed to get hit hard Sat night. We did get about 4" of accumilation, but it wasn’t near the blizzard they were predicting. The roads were pretty nasty for awhile Sat night because the precipitation changed from snow to freezing rain and sleet.
Looks like all this “High Winds” the news is talking about is just the news trying to make things sound scary. There hasn’t been any noticably strong wind that I’ve seen in Bellevue. On the other hand, it is raining quite a bit.
I think the news guys are still kicking themselves for missing the story of the windstorm last year, so they need to make something up now.
Boy, they sure are getting the brunt of it out on the coast! Hope everyone is snug and warm.
Yeah, I’ve noticed that the more they hype a big storm, the less likely it is to happen. They do occasionally get it right, however. And they occasionally have one slip completely under their radar, as it were. It just goes to show that it’s still pretty much a guessing game, despite using the most high-tech computer simulations and expensive weather-forecasting equipment they may have on hand.
It’s a tad breezy here and the rain has nearly stopped for the moment. The Weather Underground radar shows some more arriving momentarily.
My folks live between Sedro Woolley and Bellingham. When I called them this morning to see how they were doing, my pop said “Fine. Little water and a little wind”
I guess the Skagit Valley is getting spared the worst of the storm.
It used to tickle me here in Denver when the media would go on about High wind gusts up to thirty mph! When I was growing up in Sedro, the wind would get up to 60 or 70 before it even made the news.
My office is right next to the Sammamish River, and I swear it’s like five feet or so from cresting the bank. If that happens, the parking lot here is going to be a lake.
I just got back from lunch (it’s a good pho day), and there really isn’t any wind to speak of. Still a hell of a lot of rain, though. I keep hoping the power will go out so I have an excuse to go home. I’m not particularly concerned about flooding, as I’m up on the plateau, but I can easily imagine my basement taking on water.
I think the wind was more south and west of us. Lincoln City OR had gusts in the 120s last night.
Hoquiam is a mess. they had sustained winds of 50 mph over night. Power and cell phone service is out, probably for a few days. A power lineman got badly hurt, and they had to drive him out to Harborview. No Air Lift flying.
A sink hole opened up on the street going down to Golden Gardens It swallowed a car, but no one was in it. There was a mud slide across Eastlake from the Fremont bridge. Queen Anne hill, just dropping in on Fremont, I guess.
